NCAAB Preview: Xavier vs. Marquette

Date: 1/16/2016 Time: 02:00 P.M. EST  Xavier didn't dwell after Edmond Sumner was injured in its only loss of the season , and the results showed.  The seventh-ranked Musketeers are set to welcome their point guard back Saturday when they visit Marquette looking for a fourth straight victory .  Sumner, who averages 11 points and 3.1 assists, took a hard fall on a drive to the basket in the opening minutes of Xavier's 95-64 loss at Villanova on Dec. 31.   After he was taken off the court on a stretcher, the Musketeers (15-1, 3-1 Big East) never found a rhythm as Villanova shot 63.2% and hit 13 3-pointers.  Coach Chris Mack went with a conventional look in the first game without Sumner as forward James Farr had 8 points and 10 rebounds in an 88-69 victory over then-No. 16 Butler on Jan. 2, and sophomore J. P. Macura has started the last 2 games , totaling 20 points in wins over St. John's and DePaul.   Macura had 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 s...

Marquette - NOTES

Cheatham Attacking Basket, Contributing Offensively  Freshman guard Haanif Cheatham has displayed the ability to consistently get to the rim and last Saturday’s outing against St. John’s was another perfect example. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native finished with 15 points in 30'  of action. He finished 4‐of‐8 from the floor, 7‐of‐8 from the free throw line and also chipped in 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.  After reaching double figures just once in 4 outings, he has now netted 10‐or‐more in 6 of the team’s last 7 games (13.6 PPG during that time). Ranking the Big East Teams in Two Sentences or Less

http://www.coxhub.com/articles/ranking-the-big-east-teams-in-two-sentences-or-less By Daniel James — 12/29/15 2:07 PM The names on the front don't change, but the names on the back certainly do, and with the way things have shaken out in the OOC, there's even more to consider than what was thought in the original preseason predictions. But while anyone could spend eons talking about the in's and out's of each team, how many can do this ranking with a minimalist style? Here's how I'm ranking the Big East teams, in two sentences or less. 1. Xavier:  Way underrated in the preseason , which is scary because they were not that underrated to begin with. Five guys averaging double digits, a deep (DEEP) bench, and a top-level coach has me very scared of the Musketeers. 2. Villanova:  A solid team that, despite a few early losses, is terrifying-good when their game is clicking , and still better than most when it's not. I don't need to go ...

Marquette faces Seton Hall in Big East tournament

By Matt Velazquez of the Journal Sentinel March 10, 2015 New York — Over the past four months Marquette has suffered through its worst season in more than a decade, finishing with a 12-18 record. But that doesn't matter anymore, at least not to coach Steve Wojciechowski. The Big East tournament is the great equalizer and even though his Golden Eagles are the ninth seed out of 10 teams playing at Madison Square Garden this week, he knows that all bets are off in conference tournament games. "Why not us? Seeds don't matter," Wojciechowski said. "I've been in situations where I have been coaching on teams who have been the No. 1 seed and we got our butts kicked. Seeds don't matter. (For) everybody it's a fresh start." Marquette will face Seton Hall (16-14) at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the tournament opener. The teams split their regular-season matchups, with the Pirates running away in the second half for an 80-70 win in Milwaukee and the Golden Eagles ...

A Marquette man

By Jim Owczarski October 10, 2014 Coaches and other players were like ‘this kid is crazy.’ He would do whatever – it did not matter. - Josh Davalli The echo remains for Mike Dahlem, even after 30 years : hair, bone and flesh meeting wood, that supple smack that turns your stomach; the instantaneous ring of the iron under the bleachers that brings your shoulders to your ears. Steve Wojciechowski was just a seventh grader , an uncurbed point guard hurtling for a ball he couldn’t save. Dahlem was a junior varsity coach at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Baltimore, scouting potential players. He immediately made a call to his head varsity coach, Ray Mullis. There’s a kid we gotta get and you better come see him before other people know. Josh Davalli still hears an echo, too. Five years after Dahlem watched Wojciechowski Superman into the bleachers, the feverish guard was the senior captain at Cardinal Gibbons – and didn’t like the way his team was warming up prior to a game ...
