Why Nixon Hated Georgetown

Immagine
https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/06/richard-nixon-georgetown-set-118607_Page2.html By EVAN THOMAS June 04, 2015 The paranoid president never fit in with the powerful D.C. social crowd . And they never let him forget it. Nixon soon learned that Kissinger was making fun of him at Georgetown dinner parties . He tried to be philosophical about it, telling his aides that Kissinger was insecure and needed to build himself up by preening for the swells, even if that meant running down the president . Nixon would tease Kissinger. “Oh, there goes Henry to the leak to the Washington Post ,” the president would say when his national security adviser left a meeting, or, “There goes Henry to dine with his Georgetown friends.” But Kissinger’s perfidy rankled, especially when it appeared in the liberal press—the Times and Post , Time and Newsweek —that Kissinger was a dove who was trying to rein in the hawkish Nixon on Vietnam (the truth was far more complicated)....

Big East, cercasi gerarchie

Immagine
I Bluejays...

Ranking the Big East Teams in Two Sentences or Less

Immagine
http://www.coxhub.com/articles/ranking-the-big-east-teams-in-two-sentences-or-less By Daniel James — 12/29/15 2:07 PM The names on the front don't change, but the names on the back certainly do, and with the way things have shaken out in the OOC, there's even more to consider than what was thought in the original preseason predictions. But while anyone could spend eons talking about the in's and out's of each team, how many can do this ranking with a minimalist style? Here's how I'm ranking the Big East teams, in two sentences or less. 1. Xavier:  Way underrated in the preseason , which is scary because they were not that underrated to begin with. Five guys averaging double digits, a deep (DEEP) bench, and a top-level coach has me very scared of the Musketeers. 2. Villanova:  A solid team that, despite a few early losses, is terrifying-good when their game is clicking , and still better than most when it's not. I don't need to go ...

Georgetown-Xavier Preview

GEORGETOWN Georgetown hasn't lost 3 games to one opponent in a single season in 10 years, and Xavier may have to stop D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera to end that run. A day after almost single-handedly putting the NO. 23 Hoyas in the Big East semifinals , Smith-Rivera looks to lead them to their first conference title game in five years Friday night against the Musketeers at Madison Square Garden. Second-seeded Georgetown (21-9; BE 12-6) has lost 3 of 3 against Xavier (20-12) since they became conference rivals last season.   The Hoyas dropped both meetings this season by an average of 15.0 points while shooting 37.8%, including 22.9 from 3-point range. The last team to beat them 3 times in a season was Connecticut in 2004-05 . Smith-Rivera will likely play a large role in avoiding such a dubious feat. The junior guard is averaging 20.7 points while hitting 46.5 percent of his 3s over the last 6 games and was particularly outstanding in Thursday's 60-55 win ...

Pirates can finish as high as seventh in the BIG EAST with a win Saturday March 6, 2015 SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's basketball team will wrap up the 2014-15 regular season on Saturday, traveling to Washington, D.C. in search of its second-straight road victory over rival Georgetown . All 10 BIG EAST teams will be in action tomorrow and a victory could bump The Hall (16-13, 6-11 BIG EAST) up to a #7-seed in next week's conference tournament if coupled with a DePaul loss at Marquette later in the day.   The Hoyas (19-9, 11-6 BIG EAST) have won 4 of their last 5 games and remain in contention for the second seed as one of three teams tied at 11-6 behind regular season champions Villanova. The only two teams to hand Villanova a loss this season, Seton Hall and Georgetown will be meeting for the second time in just over three weeks and the 99th overall. In the first matchup at the Prudential Center, the Hoyas picked up an 86-67 victory behin...

Tyler Adams' One Last Start

Immagine
By Adam Kilgore March 6 at 3:46 PM  Georgetown Coach John Thompson III gathered his men’s basketball team after practice Thursday afternoon , ready to share a secret. Two days before senior day at Verizon Center , Thompson told his players he didn’t believe in the standard tradition of starting seniors in their final home game and that all of the Hoyas seniors already had started at some point this season, anyway.  And then the coach paused and turned to Tyler Adams.  “But we’re going to make an exception for Tyler,” Thompson said. “You’re starting.”  Smiles spread over every player . The words stunned Adams; he wondered whether his coach was joking. Thompson was serious: Adams, a Georgetown senior sidelined for almost the entirety of his career by a heart condition , will start Saturday against Seton Hall. Adams will play one possession or so, the highlight of a career snatched from him 4 games into his freshman season.  “I had no i...

Previewing Georgetown: Hall up against Hoya buzzsaw

Earlier in the season, tomorrow's matinee with Georgetown on Fox looked like it was going to be a regular season finale packed full of NCAA implications, but that won't be the case. A win for Seton Hall (16-13, 6-11) would definitely boost their NIT chances and give them some momentum heading into the Big East Tournament while additionally giving them a shot at the 7-seed at the Garden if coupled with a DePaul loss at Marquette . Regardless of the result tomorrow, an opening round win at MSG is essential for an NIT at-large. Big East Tournament seeding scenarios If Seton Hall wins tomorrow: · Will be #7 seed if DePaul loses at Marquette · Will be #8 seed if DePaul wins at Marquette If Seton Hall loses: · Will be #8 seed regardless of any other outcome As for the Hoyas (19-9, 11-6), they won't be short on motivation for a trio of reasons and have won 4 of their last 5 . They need a win tomorrow plus a Providence loss to Butler to lock up th...

Georgetown's Tyler Adams to Appear in Seton Hall Game on Senior Day

Immagine
Senior Tyler Adams will start for Georgetown on Saturday against Seton Hall. March 6, 2015 WASHINGTON - When Georgetown University senior Tyler Adams (Brandon, Miss./Brandon) first came to the Hilltop for the 2011-12 academic year, he had dreams of someday being a starter for the Hoyas men's basketball team. On Saturday, March 7 when Georgetown hosts Seton Hall for Senior Day at Verizon Center (noon), Adams will get that chance. The 6-9 senior came to Georgetown along with classmates, forward Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) and guard Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends). Four games into his freshman year, he was diagnosed with a heart ailment that ended his basketball career. Since that time, Adams has remained a part of the team, assisting in practice, traveling with the team and cheering on his teammates during the games on the bench. Head Coach John Thompson III has also referred to him as a " junior coach ." Adams h...

Sleeping with the Enemy: The Pirates of Seton Hall

A lot has changed since the Hoyas beat the Hall in Newark , most notably Jaren Sina leaving the program. Did you see that coming and what's the biggest problem in your view with the Pirates right now? There were actually whispers of Sina leaving last summer and that he had to be convinced to stay . I'm not sure how much of that was playing time since he saw 26 mpg as a freshman and playing time certainly wasn't the reason for his departure this year (32 mpg) . Seton Hall is playing some decent stretches of basketball in games right now, but they really put themselves in a hole during February that left no margin for error. They got in a real funk without Isaiah Whitehead (6-week injury) and have had trouble adjusting , especially the dynamic between him and Sterling Gibbs , since his return . How much of that is coaching and how much on the players would depend on who you ask. Gun to your head. Will Willard survive this season? Even if your answer is yes, ...

Preview: Georgetown at Seton Hall

Since defeating Villanova by 20 points on Jan. 19 , Georgetown has endured one disappointing performance after another. The Hoyas' last 5 games have included wins against Marquette (in overtime) and Creighton - the 2 worst teams in the Big East - in addition to defeats against Xavier, Providence and, most recently, Villanova. Looking to avoid a third straight loss for the first time this season, Georgetown travels to Seton Hall on Tuesday. The Pirates are struggling in their own right, having dropped 5 of 7 with the only wins coming against Marquette and DePaul.  Since knocking off Villanova on Jan. 3, Seton Hall has lost 3 of its last 4 home contests, although the defeats came by a total of 11 points. After hosting Georgetown, the Pirates begin a stretch of 3 straight road games, while the Hoyas' schedule lightens up down the stretch. ABOUT GEORGETOWN (15-8, 7-5 Big East):  The Hoyas' final 6 games include 5 contests against teams below them in the Big East st...

Butler hoping Andrew Chrabascz can go tonight vs. Hoyas

The Butler basketball team might get Andrew Chrabascz back Tuesday night. It won't be a moment too soon. The schedule is turning in a difficult direction. The 21st-ranked Bulldogs , who are in second place in the Big East , host Georgetown Tuesday at Hinkle Fieldhouse before playing at No. 24 Providence on Saturday. Those two teams are tied for third, just one game back. After that, the Bulldogs begin play in the Big East tournament next week . Win both this week's games and they earn a No. 2 seed and an opening game against one of the league's bottom feeders . Lose them both and Butler is probably the fourth seed, likely facing either Xavier or St. John's in its Big East tourney opener . Both are probable NCAA tournament teams .  St. John's would be playing on its quasi-home court at Madison Square Garden . "Obviously, it goes without saying there are no easy nights in the Big East," Butler coach Chris Holtmann said. "But both these teams ...
