The water here is generally very cold, bring a 5/3 wetsuit, hoodie and booties. There are a couple surf shops along the pacific rim highway, they also rent boards and equipment. Respecteable swell, lots of waves, mostly empty. Take your car and ride to and fro on the road to Tofino and check out the spots. like Chestermans beach for example.
Also the easy coast offers substantial waves, within twenty or thirty minutes of Halifax, nova Scotia there are dozens of spots to catch some great rides. East coast.surfing offers easily accessible breaks, within short distance from the city, unlike the west coast. Popular breaks include Lawrencetown, cow Bay and Seaforth. 5/4 is generally good, although maybe too warm in spring and summer. Four surf shops, two in Halifax, two in Lawrencetown... check it out.
