Grew up 2 blocks away without realizing this spot is in most surfing guide's lists of best places in the East. The break is one of the more consistent in the Northeast. The jetty stops the rip that's a regular feature but piles up more beach on the east of the jetty leading to a beach break that's also a bit of a point break. Waves break east but as you take your left ride, it ends peacefully in deeper water and you'll have an easy paddle back out to the lineup. Swimmers crowd the area just to the west of the jetty where a bit of deeper water forms a cove called Dead Man's Cove (perhaps after my brother pulled a guy out who drowned out of the water in 1978). On bigger days, a few brave souls paddle a quarter mile out and slightly West to catch enormous Southeast swells. Huge underwater boulders are out here where waves break against nearby shoal, "The Cliffs", to the West. Not for the faint of heart. Taking a right instead of left leads to a beach break closeout on the rocky and boulder strewn area in front of a trailer park aptly named, "Trailer Park".
Montauk Hwy (NY 27) East through downtown montauk. Turn right on Ditch Plains Road and right into parking area by the Motel.
The East Deck motel is a surfer's haven.
Need a town permit to park.
As with most of New York, it's almost always flat to knee high all summer. September's offshore storms near Bermuda brings larger swells. 4-6ft is common in the Autumn. During approaching storms, the brave may encounter waves well over 10ft. Downtown is alive with tourism and nightlife. Enjoy!
