In April 1995 TRESBP, or the Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project began pumping sand out of the river mouth and dumping it just east of Snapper Rocks. Before long the average right hand pointbreak had been transformed into the superbank, a long sand bank that produces consistent world class waves, and in the right conditions, a super long ride all the way to Kirra - nearly a kilometer away.

Due to it's quality, Snapper gets impossibly crowded and has an incredibly high standard of surfing. It is not a wave for the inexperienced. The only time it is not crowded is during one of the numerous surfing contests being held throughout the year. Later on this month (at the time of writing this) it plays host to the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, stop no. 1 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, and the Roxy Pro Gold Coast.
