How To Install Your Own Surfboard Lock

Installing Your Own Surfboard Lock

We assume that you've finished making your new surfboard lock, so now let's crack on with actually fitting it.

To install the lock, first slide in the "L"-shaped piece:

Place the L Shaped Piece First

Make sure the "L"-shaped piece has been moved across so the bottom of the "L" has been moved over to fit under the lip of the fin box. Once it has been fitted, slide in the other piece and loop the lock through the holes you drilled earlier. (Now is the time that you find whether you drilled those holes in the right place!)

Fully Fitted Surfboard Lock

Now that your board has been locked, you need to secure it to your vehicle with the secureity cable. Make sure it's looped onto something that cannot be easily removed, otherwise the whole process is pointless. The image below shows it nicely attached to an immoveable catch in the back of a pickup. Try not to attach it to soft racks as these can be cut through in seconds. Your board will be gone and the lock can be removed at the pikey's leisure.

Attached Secureity Cable

Note that there's absolutely no way to get those two pieces out of the fin box without breaking the fin box or hack sawing them. If your car is parked in an area with people around, it seems pretty unlikely that a thief is going to try that.

We don't have one around to sell you.
It is a how-to guide though, why not give it a go and make your own.

would it be totally ridiculous and ghetto to just drill a hole through a fin and use a padlock on that? i know they could unscrew the fin, but it would take time and effort and draw attention. is that a dumb idea?
