Originally from Bath, Lee Stanbury spent his summers visiting his family in Cornwall. He fell in love with the county and eight years ago decided to make the move in order to spend more time in the surf. Initially he worked for Carrick Council as a gym supervisor then undertook GP referral work using advanced exercise prescriptions. In his spare time he took on the underdeveloped St Ives swimming team and coached them to win the Cornwall Inter Club Championships.

During his time working in the fitness industry, Lee didn’t see anyone giving surf fitness guidance. Surfers who worked out at the gyms were doing to gain strength for surfing but it wasn’t sport specific enough. Lee felt there was a need to develop specific sport fitness training. So although he’d never written anything more than an email before he started writing a book on the subject which was published this summer by Orca Publications. Then he started to develop surf fitness training programmes with top surf atheletes Ben Skinner and Oli Adams. This led Lee to help develop the fitness coaching with the U18 British surf team to help improve their chances at the world games.

Lee is totally focussed on improving the fitness of British surfers, developing it in a similar way to the training camps in Australia, “Most surfers go surfing when they can, but they’re not that fit so they catch a few waves and get disappointed with their performance. I’m saying the fitter and stronger you are, the better you will perform. You will catch three times more waves and enjoy your surfing so much more.” It’s the reason why he’s written the book and he truly believes that if you follow the exercises in the book you will become a better surfer.
