Course Name Philosophical and Socio-Anthropological Foundations of Physical


Education and Sports
Course Credits 3 units

Course Description This course deals with the study of the diverse justifications on the
educational value of PE and institutions in culture and society create,
relate to, and influence physical education and sports, discussion of the
historic tradition of mind/body and the theoretical/practical knowledge
dualism; conceptual analysis of the issues of sports as a human activity
and the distinction and relationship between PE and sports.
Contact Hours/week 3 hours

Course Objectives At the end of the semester, the students must have:

1. Discuss and explain the meaning of philosophy, the general


philosophies, the philosophy of well-known physical educators and
their influence on educational thinking.
2. Distinguish the nature and scope of physical education and sports,
the role of sports in today’s world and the contributions that persons
involved in physical education and sports can make to society.
3. Work out their own philosophy about physical education and sports
based on earliest times to the present times.
4. Illustrate the history of physical education and sports from earlier
times to the present times.
5. Evaluate the socio-anthropological principles from which physical
education derive principles and concepts used in teaching.
