A librarian guide to COUNTER reporting and report types, as well as turnaway reports for books and journals.

COUNTER report types

Journal Report 1 (JR1) - number of successful full-text article requests by month and journal


Journal Report 1A (JR1A) - number of successful full-text article requests from an archive by month and journal


Journal Report 1GOA (JR1GOA) - number of successful Gold Open Access full-text article requests by month and journal


Journal Report 2 (JR2) - access denied to full-text articles by month, journal and category


Journal Report 5 (JR5) - number of successful full-text article requests by year-of-publication (YOP) and journal


Book Report 2 (BR2) - number of successful section requests by month and title


Book Report 3 (BR3) - access denied to content items by month, title and category


Platform Report 1 (PR1) - total searches, result clicks and record views by month and platform


Non COUNTER reports

Alternative journal turnaway report - counts the following events:


  • Clicks on "Recommend to librarian" from journal homepage
  • Clicks on the "Get access" link from a listing or search results page (a turnaway will not be recorded from the article page itself as this is already recorded as a regular turnaway in COUNTER report JR2)

Alternative book turnaway report - counts the following events:


  • Clicks on "Recommend to librarian" from book homepage
  • Clicks on "Buy the print book" from book or chapter pages where there is no access (the report will not record a turnaway if a user has access)
  • Clicks on the "Get access" link from a listing or search results page (a turnaway will not be recorded from the book/chapter page itself as this is already recorded as a regular turnaway in COUNTER report BR3)
