Polynomial

This document is a learning activity sheet from the Republic of the Philippines Department of Education for an Alternative Learning System student. It provides background information and examples to define polynomials by explaining that a polynomial is the sum or difference of algebraic expressions consisting of constants and variables. It notes polynomials can be named based on the number of terms, provides examples of monomials, binomials, and trinomials, and asks the student to identify the number of terms and name polynomials.

I .Background Information:
POLYNOMIALS - A polynomial is the sum or difference of algebraic expressions
(consisting of constants and variables). Common variables used are x and y. Each algebraic
expression in a polynomial is called a term.
Polynomials can be named based on the number of terms

II. Example/ Illustration :

Exponent

Coefficient 3x 5 Variable

− 2x has exactly one term, this is called a monomial

4 has exactly one term, a constant, and is also a monomial
x + 1 has exactly two terms, x and 1, this is called a binomial
x2 + 3x − 4 has 3 terms x2, 3x, and – 4, this is called a trinomial
x3 - 3x2 + 6x - 15 has 4 terms, polynomials with 4 or more terms are generally
referred to as multinomials.
III.Question / Problem :
How many terms are there in the following polynomial
TRY THIS QUICK:
expression?

3x 3 has terms and is called a

2x 3 + y 2 –2 x +y+3 has terms and is called a

x +1 has terms and is called a

x 2 + 3x − 4 has terms and is called a

−5 has terms and is called a
