1) The document provides instructions on algebra homework covering topics like: adding and subtracting like terms; multiplying and dividing any terms; differences between expressions like (ab)2 and (a + b)n. 2) It also contains examples of simplifying expressions by combining like terms, and removing brackets from expressions with two or three sets of brackets. 3) The final section provides examples of factorizing expressions, like writing 10x as x multiplied by 10, and providing practice factorizing other algebraic expressions.

HOMEWORK (19/1/2020)

ALGEBRA
Note:

- Only like terms can be added/subtracted. For example:

o ‘x’ can be added to ‘x’ only
o ‘x2’ can be added to ‘x2’ only
o ‘y’ can be added to ‘y’ only
- Any terms can be multiplied or divided. For example:
o 2𝑥 × 𝑦 2 = 2𝑥𝑦 2
𝑥3
o 𝑥 3 ÷ 𝑥 2 = 𝑥2 = 𝑥
- Don’t mix up between:
o (ab)2 = a2b2
o (a + b)n = (a + b)(a + b)

Questions

Simplify

E.g. p + p2 + 5p - 3p2 = (p + 5p) + (p2 - 3 p2) = 6p - 2p2

1) 4a + 3a2 – 2a = 3a2 + 2a
2) 7x + 3y – 13y – x2 = -x2 +7x - 10y
𝑛 𝑚 𝑛 𝑛
3) – – + = 23/60n – m/2
4 2 5 3
𝑚 2𝑚
4) – = -m/x
𝑥 𝑥
3 2
5) – b + + 2𝑏 = 1/a + b
𝑎 𝑎
Remove brackets and simplify

1) 3x(x + 4) – x(x – 2) = 2x2 + 14x

2) 3ab – 2a(b – 2) = ab + 4a
3) y(3y – 1) – (3y – 1) = 3y2 – 4y + 1
4) 7b(a + 2) – a(3b + 3) = 4ab – 3a + 14b

Two Brackets

Remove brackets and simplify

1) (2x + 3)(x – 6) = 2x2 – 9x - 18

2) (5x – 3)(4y + 3) = 20xy +15x – 12y - 9
3) 3y(y – 2)(y + 3) = 3y(y2 + y – 6) = 3y3 + 3y2 – 18y
4) (x – 3)2 = x2 – 6x + 9
5) (a – b)2 = a2 – 2ab + b2
Three Brackets

Remove brackets and simplify

1) (x – 1)(x + 2)(x – 5) = (x2 + x - 2)(x – 5) = x3 – 4x2 – 7x + 10

2) (x – 4)2 = x2 – 8x + 16
3) (x – 1)(2x – 3)2 = (x – 1)(4x2 – 12x + 9) = 4x3 – 16x2 + 21x - 9

Factorisation

e.g. x2 + x3 = x2 (1 + x)

Replace ‘•’ with the answer

1) 10x = x(•) ; 10
2) x5 = x2(•) ; x3
3) x2 = x2(•) ; 1
4) 6x2y = 3x(•) ; 2xy
1 1
5) = (•) ; 1/x
𝑥2 𝑥
5𝑦
6) 𝑥
= 5𝑦(•) ; 1/x

Factorise

1) 2a + a2 = a(2 + a)
2) 18xy + 6y = 6y(3x +1)
3) x3 – 3x + 5 = x(x2 – 3) + 5
1 2 1 2
4) – = (1 − )
𝑥 𝑥2 𝑥 𝑥
11𝑦 2𝑦 𝑦 11
5) + = ( + 2)
𝑥2 𝑥 𝑥 𝑥
