CIE 081 Assignment PDF

This document contains instructions for 5 structural engineering assignments: 1. Determine the tensile capacity of a C310x31 beam section connected with 24mm bolts based on gross and net sections. 2. Determine the tensile strength and block shear strength of a W410x67 beam connected to plates at each flange. 3. Determine the tensile capacity of an A36 steel plate with 22mm bolts based on its net section. 4. Compute the section properties rx and ry for a built-up column composed of a W360x134 and W250x73. 5. CIE 081 ASSIGNMENT

1. A C310 × 31 is connected with 24mm diameter bolts in each flange, as shown in figure. Use Fy = 345
MPa, Fu = 450 MPa, and Ae = 0.90An. Determine the tensile capacity based on gross section and net
section.

2. A W410 x 67 of A992 (Fy = 345 MPa, Fu = 450 MPa) steel is connected to a plate at each flange as
shown. Determine the tensile strength based on the net section and block shear strength. Use U =
0.85

3. The tension member shown in is a A36 (Fy = 248 MPa, Fu = 400 MPa) steel plate. The bolts are
22mm in diameter. Thickness of the plate = 16mm. Determine the tensile capacity based on the net
section.
4. A compression member is built up from a W360 × 134 and a W250 × 73. Compute rx and ry for the
built-up shape.

5. In order to reinforce a column in an existing structure, two channels are welded to the column as
shown. Fy = 248 MPa for both the column and the channels. The effective length with respect to
each axis is 4.80 meters. What is the axial compressive strength of the column?
