The cast of Warfare has shared their interesting bonding experience while filming the upcoming movie.

Written and directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, Warfare explores the story behind the United States' invasion of Iraq in 2006, based on the latter's real-life experience. The movie follows a platoon of Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, as they watch over the movement of US forces through insurgent territory.

"A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare, told like never before: in real time and based on the memory of the people who lived it," reads the synopsis.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Warfare stars Kit Connor, Joseph Quinn, Will Poulter, Charles Melton and D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai discussed how the cast bonded on set by taking part in the SEAL tradition of giving each other nicknames.

Quinn was tagged as "Funcle"; Taylor John Smith was called "Lamb Bone"; and Woon-A-Tai was given a few, including Mendoza's nickname "Baby Ray", but eventually landed on "DP" and "Doza".

Melton borrowed his dad's Army moniker, "Top", after initially being called "Romeo"; and Cosmo Jarvis took on "Booger," the nickname of Elliott Miller, the man he portrays.

Meanwhile, Quinn shared that Poulter was referred to as "'Daddy', obviously", with Connor explaining the spontaneous way the name came about.

"We were walking back from a curry house, and we were all not even drunk a drop — we were just high on life," he recalled.

"I can't remember who said it, but someone was just like, 'What if we started calling Will 'Daddy' in front of [co-directors Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza]? And they'll hate that, and it's going to be great.' And for some reason, everyone loved it, and it stuck."

In another bonding experience, the cast - bar Quinn and Poulter - got matching tattoos referencing the opening of the movie which sees the SEALs watching the music video for Erik Prydz's 'Call on Me'.

"We got 'Call on Me,' a little cheesy metaphor that we can all call on each other," Woon-A-Tai explained. "On a serious note, that's the same song that became a tradition for these guys. Before they would leave [for the day], they would watch this music video. So that became a little tradition with us, too. Somebody would play it right in the morning, and it would hype us up."

Warfare arrives in US cinemas on April 11 and UK cinemas on April 18.
