Kibi Province (吉備国, Kibi no kuni) was a very old province of Japan in the area as Okayama Prefecture and eastern Hiroshima Prefecture on the island of Honshū.[1] It was sometimes called Bishū (備州).

Kibi was divided into Bizen, Bitchū, and Bingo provinces in the late 7th century.[2]

  2. The name of these provinces was created using a kanji character from Kibi. A suffix was added according to the distance from the capital -- Bizen (備+zen = "near"), Bitchū (備+chū = "middle"), and Bingo (備+go = "far").
