Mariah Carey has claimed that the 9/11 terror attacks played a part in the failure of her 2001 film Glitter.

The 39-year-old, who stars as a social worker in new drama Precious, said that Glitter's September 11 release date was the worst possible time to put out the movie.

"Here's the thing that a lot of people don't know, that movie was released on September 11, 2001 - could there be a worse day for that movie to come out?" PA quotes her as saying. "I don't even know that many people even saw the movie."

Reevaluating Glitter, which saw Carey play an aspiring music star, the singer insisted that it is not the "worst thing ever done".

"If I could go back in time and not do it, yeah, I would definitely not do it," she commented. "But at the time, I was auditioning for smaller roles and wanting to do more independent things. But everybody was like, 'No, she's too well known. She's going to take us out of the movie'."

Glitter made just $5.3 million dollars at the worldwide box office on its cinema release.
