Grandfather Mountain is a mountain, a non-profit attraction, and a North Carolina state parknear Linville, North Carolina. At 5,946 feet (1,812 m), it is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of the major chains of the Appalachian Mountains. The Blue Ridge Parkway passes by the south side of the mountain and also passes over the nearby Grandmother Gap. It is located at the meeting point of Avery, Caldwell (highest point), and Watauga (highest point) counties.

Er erhebt sich 1219 Meter über das Tal des Catawba River. Auf dem Berg herrschen mitunter sehr starke Winde, mit gemessenen Spitzen von über 320 km/h. Auf der Südflanke des Berges verläuft der Blue Ridge Parkway aufgeständert, dieser Abschnitt wurde 1987 als letzter Teil der seit 1936 gebauten und 750 km langen Freizeitstraße fertiggestellt. Grandfather Mountain ist in Privatbesitz und wird als Naturreservat und Ausflugsziel genutzt. Der Berg ist bekannt für die 1952 errichtete Mile High Swinging Bridge, welche die höchste Hängebrücke der Vereinigten Staaten ist. Eine befestigte Straße, an der Informationen über die Wildnis ausgestellt sind und Picknickgelegenheiten angrenzen, führt hinauf zu dieser Brücke, in deren Nähe sich auch ein Museum befindet. Der Berg bietet eine große Zahl an verschiedenen Wanderwegen mit unterschiedlichem Schwierigkeitsgrad. Auf dem Grandfather Mountain werden jährlich die abgehalten, die zu den größten und populärsten Highland Games der Vereinigten Staaten zählen. Auf der Spitze von Grandfather Mountain gibt es noch einen Reliktbestand des ursprünglich in den Appalachen vorherrschenden Fichten-Tannen Walds, aus Engelmann-Fichten (Picea engelmannii) und Felsen-Tannen (Abies lasiocarpa). Dieser Waldtyp starb im 20. Jahrhundert fast komplett aus. Grund war die Einführung des Neozoon Adelges piceae, einer Pflanzenlausart. Im Film Forrest Gump sieht man den Titelhelden, gespielt von Tom Hanks, wie er in einer Szene die Serpentinen zum Grandfather Mountain hinaufläuft. Es ist der Moment, als er beim Laufen Gesellschaft bekommt. Die entsprechende Stelle ist inzwischen mit Schildern als Forrest Gump Curve ausgezeichnet worden. (de)

Góra oferuje szlaki turystyczne różnego stopnia trudności. Najtrudniejsze wymagają wspinaczki po drabinach na szczyt i tarasy widokowe. W miarę pokonywania wysokości zaobserwować można aż 16 różnych ekosystemów. Grandfather Mountain wznosi się w pobliżu rzeki . Sama zaś daje początek dwóm innym: Linville, wypływającej po wschodniej stronie i Watauga z zachodniej strony szczytu oraz kilku mniejszym źródłom. Jeden z największych w Ameryce Północnej festiwali kultury szkockiej i celtyckiej – Highland games – jest organizowany właśnie na Grandfather Mountain. Festiwal przyciąga gości z całego świata oraz potomków szkockich pionierów, którzy osiedlali się w pobliżu góry. Organizowane są szkockie gry i rozbrzmiewa ludowa muzyka. Szczyt Grandfather Mountain jest pokryty lasem świerkowo-jodłowym. Jego ilość jest niewielka z powodu wyniszczenia drzewostanu na początku XX wieku, gdy obszar dotknęła plaga drzewnych szkodników Balsam woolly adelgidsa. (pl)
