Construction on the 1,820m-long, 135m-high dam began in August 2006 to harness the waters of the
Tigris river. Turkey's then prime minister, and now president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan has justified the project, saying that two-thirds of the country's energy potential remained unexploited.
TURKEY has said Iraqis have nothing to fear from the filling of an upstream reservoir on the
Tigris river, saying "sufficient quantities of water" would continue to flow to the neighbouring country.
On their quest to achieve development, Iraq's neighbours, Turkey and Iran, have restricted high levels of water flows to the
Tigris River.
"We are still waiting for their response to our request and we expect that they will answer us next week." Rasheed said that Iraq is facing similar problems with Iran, which has cut the water imports of the
Tigris river from 40 percent to 15 percent due to the projects and dams that Iran has established on the river during the past years.
