Introduction

• With the evolution of technology, the concept of Internet of Things(IoT) has

gained importance. IoT involves LLNs. Wireless Sensor Networks are the

example for LLNs.

• 6LoWPAN allows for the smallest devices with limited processing ability

to transmit information wirelessly using an internet protocol.

• The significance of this proposed work is that it provides the information

necessary for understanding the RPL protocol.

• Contiki Operating System is selected as it provides greater flexibility for

exploring and implementing RPL protocol effectively.

RPL Protocol

RPL is an IPv6 routing protocol which is based upon the distance vector concept. It
helps in reduction of complexity in routing, memory used, control messages sent.

Advantages of 6LoWPAN and RPL
 6LoWPAN is suitable only for IPV6 based networks which supports 128 bits of
information.
 It works great with open IP standard including TCP, UDP, HTTP, COAP.
 It offers end-to-end IP addressable nodes. There is no need for a gateway, only a router
which can connect the 6LoWPAN network to IP.
 It supports self-healing, robust and scalable mesh routing.
 Offers one-to-many & many-to-one routing.
 The 6LoWPAN mesh routers can route data to others nodes in the network.
 In a 6LowPAN network, leaf nodes can sleep for a long duration of time.
RPL protocol can quickly create
• It can quickly create network routes.
• Responsible to get shortest path.
• Adapt the topology in an efficient way.

Disadvantages of 6LoWPAN

• It is less secure than Zigbee.

• If compare to interference, it has less immunity than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
devices.
• There are not many disadvantages to 6LoWPAN if compare with the
advantages.  We can conclude that the 6LoWPAN is good to be used and have
more benefits for everyone.

Conclusion

For any communication system, routing is important, this paper includes an insight
of the routing protocol RPL which suits the IoT applications. The key aspects
covered in this paper are: RPL is explained clearly by including the DODAG
formation, the features of Contiki OS and its associated simulator Cooja that makes
it suitable for implementing RPL are mentioned.
