8. Three forces are acting on a meteoroid; 32 N due north, 19 N due south, and 13 N due south. What

9. A framed painting weighs 220 N. The two wires supporting it equally make an angle of 120o with
each other. What are the tensions in the wire?

10. A 50.0-kg boy hangs from the center of a clothesline and distorts the line so that it makes 20.0o
angles with the horizontal at each end. Find the tension in the clothesline.

11. A block on an inclined plane just begins to slip if the inclination of the plane is 50o.
(a) What is the coefficient of static friction?
(b) If the block has a mass of 2-kg, what is the actual frictional force just before it begins to slip?
12. Determine the horizontal force needed to accelerate a 25.0-kg grocery cart from rest to 0.45 m/s
in 1.30 s if the coefficient of friction between the cart and the floor is 0.15.

13. A 100.0-N table is pushed by a horizontal force of 40.0 N for 3.00 s. What is the velocity of the table
at the end of 3.00 s? The coefficient of kinetic friction between the floor and table is 0.250.

14. A 0.50 kg figurine is being pulled across the surface of a table by a horizontal string. The coefficient
of kinetic friction between the figurine and the table is 0.70.
(a) What is the tension on the string if the figurine is moving at constant speed?
(b) What is the tension on the string if the figurine accelerates at 4.0 m/s2?

15. A 20.0-kg wagon is pulled by John along the level ground by a rope inclined at 30o above the
horizontal. The coefficient of friction is 0.31. John wishes to accelerate the wagon from 3.0 m/s to
5.0 m/s in 5.0 s. What force must John apply?

16. A 12.0-kg box is released from the top of an incline that is 5.00 m long and makes an angle of 40o to
the horizontal. A 60.0 N friction force impedes the motion of the box.
