VDR OVERVIEW

WHAT IS VOYAGE DATA RECORDER?

VDR is a “Black Box” for the ship in a word.

It is a complex system
collecting many navigation and status
information on the ship including audio
and radar information - converting it to
digital format and storing it in a protected
memory.
VDR OVERVIEW

WHAT IS VOYAGE DATA RECORDER NOT?

- VDR is Not the replay function on ECDIS

- VDR is Not a rudder/machine telegraph
printer
- VDR is Not a Video tape recorder

You could say that:

VDR is an advanced electronic log book
VDR OVERVIEW

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A VDR?

The purpose of a VDR is to maintain a store, in a secure
and retrievable form, of information concerning the
position, movement, physical status, command and
control of a vessel over the period leading up to, and
following, an incident having an impact thereon.
This information is for use during any subsequent
investigation to identify the causes of the incident

IEC 61996 4.2 Purpose (A.861/1)

VDR OVERVIEW

PERFORMANCE REGULATIONS
• IMO has adopted a resolution A.861(20), which
is a document stating basic “performance
standard” for the VDR (which needs
interpretation).
• IEC 61996,Performance requirements and
Methods of testing and required results”
interpreting (standardising) the IMO resolution.

the signal ground connection of the isolated EIA 485 receiver. Only a specific
“C” wire may be connected here, not the outer screen of the cable.
For standard NMEA devices, terminal “C” should not be used – instead a standard twisted
