1. Introduction
This book describes how to replace a CPU card (PICOe-9452) of ECDIS EC-8000/8500
and Bridge monitor BM-8000/8500 with a new one (PICOe-HM650).

1.2 Tools and Devices

The following tools and devices are at least necessary to install units.

Tools Devices

⁃ Phillips head screwdriver (M) ⁃ USB keyboard

⁃ Philips head screwdriver (S) ⁃ USB mouse
⁃ Spanner ⁃ Data copy kit, which consists of the
⁃ Flathead screwdriver (2.5mm) following 4 components.
⁃ Flathead screwdriver (L) ‧ CF card reader (BSCR05TU2BK)
‧ DOM connection PWB
‧ USB-DOM converter (USB-CVIDE5)
‧ USB cable

* A PS/2 keyboard and a mouse are used on the system with the old type of CPU card,
but on the system with the new type of CPU card, a USB keyboard and a mouse should
be used, and the PS/2 keyboard and mouse are unavailable.

The dedicated devices are required to copy the ECDIS setting data, etc. from the
ROM-WIN card for the old CPU card (PICOe-9452) and DOM (disk on module).

1.3 Software for Use

The following versions of the software are necessary.

System Software Version

ECDIS EC-8000/8500/8000K/8500K
Ver.1.7.0 Build #30 or newer
Remote ECS
Bridge MonitorBM-8000/8500/8000K/8500K Ver.1.7.0 Build #30 or newer

* When a system with an old CPU card is connected to another system with a new CPU
card, the both systems’ software has to be upgraded. Even when you visit a ship for the
purpose of replacing CPU cards, if the ship is equipped with Bridge Monitor and/or
remote ECS besides ECDIS, you have to take their software with you.

3. Operation Check
3.1 ECDIS Startup
Connect a USB mouse to the control unit first and then turn on the AC breaker and the
POWER switch on the operation panel to start Windows®. If the system does not start,
see “9 Troubleshooting”.
* When you see the message “You must restart your computer to apply these changes.”
at the system startup, restart Windows® after disabling the write-protection (seeing
‘3.3.3 How to Disable Write-Protection’)..

3.2 Devices Connection to CPU Card

After Windows® starts, make sure that devices are properly connected to the CPU card
by use of the USB mouse.

1. Click [Start] on the desktop on your computer.

2. Click [devmgmt] from the start menu to open the device manager.

2. Click [devmgmt].

1. Click [Start].

3. Check the following items on the device manager window, seeing the next page.
See “9 Troubleshooting” when you cannot go smoothly.

3.3 Disabling Write-Protection

3.3.1 Write-Protection
Write-protection is a function to prevent the system settings from being changed by
mistake. It is called read-only, too.
When Windows® starts normally on the control unit with the new CPU card, the
write-protect function is enabled. Even if you change settings on Windows® with it, the
new settings are not reflected even after you restart the system. However, when it is
disabled, the new settings are reflected after you restart the system. When you restart
the system even after it is changed to disabled, it is automatically enabled.
Therefore, when you like to change some settings, you have to disable the
write-protection.

3.3.2 Distinction between Write-protected and Writable

You check if the system condition is write-protected by an icon on the task tray on your
desktop.

....... Write-protected (Write-protection enabled = Read only)

....... Writable (Write-protection disabled)

Replacing CPU Cards

3.3.3 How to Disable Write-Protection

There are two ways of disabling the write-protection. One is that starting the service
menu of ECDIS or Bridge Monitor automatically disables the write-protection. Another is
that changing icons on the task tray switches between write-protected and writable. The
procedure is below.

When Windows® starts on ECDIS or Bridge Monitor, the write-protection is usually

enabled and you see icon on the task tray.

Write-protected
= Read only

Right-click on the icon and then

choose [Set Write mode now], you see
icon which stands for
‘write-protect disabled = writable’
instead of .

Write-protect disabled
= Writable
Replacing CPU Cards

4. Settings for IP Addresses and Serial Card

IP address setting and COM ports setting for the PCI-connected serial card are
automatically executed by the special software.

* Disable the write-protection (= make the system writable) seeing ‘3.3.3 How to Disable
Write-Protection’ before these settings.

1. Click [Start] at the desktop

screen and then click
[HM650SetTool] on the start
menu.

2. On the HM650 Set Tool

window, choose the relevant
system and then click [Set].
Replacing CPU Cards

3. When you see [COM: OK],

[LAN: OK] at Result, the
setting is completed. Click
[Exit], and the HM650 Set
Tool window disappears.

4. Restart the system. The new

IP address setting is
reflected after you restart it.

* See ““9 Troubleshooting” when

you change IP addresses or
COM ports and when there is
something wrong with
communication between ECDIS
and other devices or with
communication through the COM
ports.

5. Software Installation
5.1 Installing ECDIS EC-8000/8500 Software
* Disable the write-protection (= make the system writable) seeing ‘3.3.3 How to Disable
Write-Protection’ before setting the serial card.

■ Checking the USB-based dongle type

1. Take out the USB-based dongle from the control unit to check the type “32k” or
“72k(Java)”, which is indicated on the surface. After checking, insert it back.

Check the indication

“32k” or “72k(Java)”.

■ Starting the software installation

2. Confirm that the USB-based dongle is inserted and then insert the media which
ECDIS EC-8100/8500 installer contains into an appropriate drive or port.

3. Double-click “Setup.exe” which is the ECDIS EC-8000/8500 installer, and the

installation starts.

Start ECDIS. Turn on Radar overlay to check that radar images are normally displayed.
(Regarding the operation about the radar overlay and how to set, see “operation manual”
and “installation manual” for each system.)

8.10 Chart Reinstallation

Since you replaced the CPU cards, you cannot take over the chart data from the
defective CPU card an you have to install charts from scratch. The way of the chart
installation is same as before the CPU cards replacement. See “ECDIS operator’s
manual” for the detail of the chart installation.
