Tutorial Sheet 4

Q.1 Find the directional derivative of the function f (x, y, z) = cos xy + eyz + ln zx at P0 (1, 0, 1/2)
in the direction of v = i + 2j + 2k.

Q.2 Show that the directional derivative of the function f (x, y) at (0, 0) exists in all the directions
but f is not differentiable at (0, 0), where
 2
 xy for (x, y) ̸= (0, 0),
f (x, y) = x2 + y 2
0 for (x, y) = (0, 0).

Q.3 Let f (x, y) = 21 |x| − |y| − |x| − |y| . Find all the directions in which the directional deriva-
tive of f exists at the origin. Is f differentiable at the origin? Justify.

Q.4 Is there a direction u in which the rate of change of f (x, y, z) = xy 2 −yz 2 +zx2 at P (1, −1, −1)
is −4? Justify.

Q.5 Find the equation for the (i) tangent plane and (ii) normal line (in parametric form) at point
P0 (1, 1, −1) on the surface x2 − xy − y 2 − z = 0.

Q.6 Find parametric equation of the tangent line to the curve of intersection of the surfaces
z = x2 + y 2 and z = 4 − y at point P0 (2, −1, 5).

Q.7 Find the linear approximation of f (x, y) = ln(x2 + y 2 ) at the point (1, 1). Then, determine
the upper bound of the error over the region |x − 1| ≤ 0.05 and |y − 1| ≤ 0.05.

Q.8 Examine the following functions for local maxima, local minima and saddle points:
(i) 4xy − x4 − y 4 (ii) x3 − 3xy 2
Rb
Q.9 Find two numbers a and b with a ≤ b such that a
(6 − x − x2 )dx is maximum.

Q.10 Find the absolute maxima of f (x, y) = xy on the unit disc {(x, y) : x2 + y 2 ≤ 1}.

Q.11 Show that the maximum value of a2 b2 c2 on a sphere of radius r centered at the origin of a
Cartesian abc-coordinate system is (r2 /3)3 . Using this result, show that for non-negative numbers
a, b, c
1 a+b+c
(abc) 3 ≤ .
3
(This is AM-GM inequality for three non-negative numbers.)
