READING 2
In my work for an environmental charity, I’m often surprised by how many people believe that they can’t do anything
to help save the planet and that only governments can make a difference.
I agree that it’s extremely important for governments around the world to work together to face the big issues, such
as reducing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Or finding ways to provide new forms of energy in order to reduce
our dependence on fossil fuels. In that way, it is true that governments are the ones that need to act.
However, it is us—ordinary citizens—that vote for those governments. So, the first thing we can do is to make sure
that the governments we vote for have strong environmental policies and serious strategies to deal with the global
climate crisis. Find out about the parties you might vote for and check what their plans are to help the environment.
Nowadays, all parties have some form of environmental plan. Ask local politicians questions about what they will do.
You can write or visit their offices.
On a more personal level, while it’s true that a regular home doesn’t use as much energy or create as many greenhouse
gases as industry does, it is also true that when you add together the energy used by all the households in the country,
it’s a lot! Here’s just one example: when everybody boils water for their tea or coffee at the same time in the morning,
it can sometimes cause problems with the energy supply. Imagine how much energy homes use in winter when we all
have our heaters on to keep warm.
Individual people and families need to take more responsibility for the energy they use and the pollution they cause.
All of us should think about how we get to school, work, or college and what impact that transportation has on the
environment. What about our homes? Are they energy-efficient? Can we go on vacation locally instead of traveling
abroad or can we reduce the amount of waste we produce? Changing our behavior in all these areas can make a real
difference.
In the end, it’s important to remember that even the smallest actions can have an enormous effect when they are all
added together. We all need to join together to fix the problem. Let’s start now and be a part of the solution!

WRITING
16 What can ordinary people do to help f ight climate change and save the planet? Write an essay. Write at least
200 words.
Possible answers: We all know that the environment and our society are in danger due to climate change and the global
climate crisis. However, I believe that if everyone works together and makes an effort, we can change our future and
save our planet.
T he first thing everyone can do is look at how energy-efficient their home is. T here are many ways to make your walls and
roof better at keeping heat in. T his will save you money and keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer, as
well as save energy. Another thing you can do if you live in a hot sunny country is to install solar panels to create your own
energy.
Apart from our homes, there is also the issue of transportation. If you are using a gasoline automobile, then you could
replace it with an electric one. It would also be better if more people used public transportation, such as buses and trains,
or used bikes instead of vehicles. Walking or cycling to work reduces pollution and helps to keep people fit and healthy.
Many people have found that the results from small changes in their lifestyle have been very positive.
I believe that there is a lot we can all do to help improve our environment. We just need to take responsibility for our
actions.
