Exercise2 EarthScience

The biosphere is a closed system comprising all living parts of Earth. Organisms obtain energy by consuming other organisms, allowing energy to circulate through ecosystems. Energy pyramids illustrate how only 10% of energy is transferred from each trophic level to the next, with the remaining 90% lost as waste and heat. Students completed energy pyramids showing decreasing energy availability at higher trophic levels for various food chains involving acorns, phytoplankton, and an original chain with plants and rabbits.

The Biosphere

The biosphere is a closed system that makes up all living

components of Earth. In this system, an organism can consume
another organism to allow energy to circulate to the ecosystem.

Answer the following activities to show how energy is being passed

on from one organism to another.

Energy Pyramids show the loss of energy through an ecosystem.

4th Trophic Level = Tertiary Consumers

A. Place the organisms in each food chain into the proper location on the energy pyramid.

1. Acorn → Squirrel → Crow → Coyote

4. Only 10% of the energy available at each trophic level moves on to the next level. What happens to
the other 90%?
The other 90% of the energy is either not consumed, or lost through waste and heat.

5. An easy way to calculate the amount of energy available at each level is to

Calculate the percent of energy that is transferred from the first trophic level to the second
trophic level. Divide energy from trophic level one and multiply by 100.

B. Complete the pyramid in each question.

6. Acorn → Squirrel → Crow → Coyote

1 kcal- Coyote
1,000 kcal are available for the 1st trophic level,
100 kcal for the 2nd trophic level, 10 kcal for the
3rd trophic level. How many kcal are available 10 kcal- Crow
for the tertiary consumer?
