ENG MAJOR 20 – TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT OF LITERATURE STUDIES

Entry No. 1

Title Early Language and Literacy

URL https://alnf.org/program/early-language-literacy/

Annotation Early Language and Literacy (EL & L) aims to provide sufficient
knowledge to educators, parents, and community members for children to
efficiently learn language and literacy skills. It is to help children that live in
urban, regional, and remote communities that experience health and
development issues, transgenerational illiteracy, and disengagement from
education (EL & L). It involves training in direct and designed resources, and
the target community members will be provided with the requisite teaching
tools, learning resources, and strategies to aid the aforementioned crisis. The
program's expected outcome is to empower and strengthen the teaching
capability, as well as the knowledge to demonstrate learning the fundamental
and literacy skills to children.

Reflection/Understanding

Many theories, including nativists, behaviorists, and interactionists, claim

that language can be learned in a variety of ways thus this program will help
future educators to further understand and cultivate learning towards their
diverse students. The aforementioned above also stated that at an early
stage, children tend to learn language by just imitating and by what they hear.
The program above focuses on how the children can learn language and
literacy, which is very timely and needed at this time. Children at a young age
will very likely have some knowledge as long as they are taught in an
effective manner. This will have an effect on how they think and how they
behave in the future. If educators consistently teach the youngsters, this
program will be successful with a success rate for learning despite of where
and how they live.

schools and how to develop a literacy intervention plan for K-12 learners.
Reflection/Understanding:
This will be a big help to foster the knowledge in teaching a diverse students
since they have different knowledge and capabilities in language and literacy
skills. Students have their own differences when it comes in learning and
strategies on how to acquire knowledge. Thus, this program will make every
English teacher to be more competent and innovative in creating a conducive
teaching ways, materials, and activities for teaching language and literacy.
So, students will have a better learning experiences. It will also equipped us
as a future English teachers on how to handle those different kinds of
circumstances in order to cater the needs of every student.

Title Diploma in Language and Literacy Education

URL https://fed.upou.edu.ph/diploma/diploma-in-language-and-literacy-education/

Annotation Language and Literacy Education program is a school-based

program that focuses on the provision of updated and upgraded literacy
professionals including literacy teachers, administrators, trainers, textbook
writers, curriculum developers, learning resource designers and researchers.
It aims to develop more qualified and equipped literacy professionals who can
understand, develop and design, organize and implement, assess/evaluate
the language and literacy education. To develop this, admission requires
having a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized tertiary or higher education
institution. Also, it provides a strong foundation in language and literacy
education, a field of study that brings together the students' knowledge in
literacy and language arts (including oral and written communication, reading,
second language learning, and literacy practices in diverse contexts) from
various disciplines.
Reflection/Understanding:
Like the tree, it needs roots first for it to grow, and bloom, likewise, to
the purpose of teachers. Teachers are the base and foundation of the
knowledge, learnings and skills of the students, thus, maintaining and
equipping highly trained literacy professionals are in demand in today's
generation, especially in the Philippines, which is now tackling the importance
of having in-demand and competent teachers. Upon understanding the given
program, it is not difficult to point out its hidden goal - to produce and develop
students who have knowledge in literacy and language arts. Through this
hidden goal, the program sees to improve first the quality of knowledge and
skills of literacy professionals then bequeath those improved qualities to their
students.

Title Basa, Pilipinas!

URL https://www.edc.org/basa-pilipinas
Annotation The “Basa, Pilipinas!” is a school-based program that aims to improve the
English, Filipino, and mother tongue literacy skills of 1 million young students.
Including reformed reading instruction improved reading delivery systems and
increased access to quality reading materials. This program was tested
innovative models for reading remediation inside the classroom. The program
is composed of three main activities such as providing technical assistance to
the Philippines Department of Education in the development of valid and
reliable early grade reading standards, delivering quality teacher professional
development opportunities that support improved literacy instruction in the
classroom, and improved access to quality reading materials. It begins with
the idea on how they will teach 1 million young students? Later on EDC
supports DepEd ambitions and funded by the USAID.

Reflection/Understanding:

It is important to focus on reading at such a young age in order for them

to hone their reading literacy more when they get older. Back in my
elementary days, there were some students who couldn't really read well,
though we were already in grade 6 back then. So, focusing on improving
reading instruction and increasing access to quality reading materials will help
a million young students improve their literacy and avoid becoming illiterate,
just as the Basa Pilipinas program did in our country. Not only students
improved, but also the instructions in the classroom and the teacher itself.

Title Hamon: Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs Initiative)

URL https://www.deped.gov.ph/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/DM_s2019_173-
1.pdf

Annotation Hamon: Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs Initiative) is a readership program

that supports and strengthens the Every Child A Reader Program (ECARP).
This is a Department of Education's response under DepEd Memorandum no.
173, s. 2019 in fulfilling its mandate to make every learner equipped with
essential competencies and skills. To attain such a goal, DepEd proposes
three aims such as equipping learners with reading skills to make them
proficient and independent readers, capacitating teachers to become effective
reading teachers, and nurturing a culture of reading in schools, communities,
and various levels of governance of DepEd. This program sees such
initiatives that are still not enough to make the learners proficient in reading,
thus, addressing those gaps give way to developing the idea of this program.

Reflection/Understanding:

This program is a great stepping stone for the students in learning literacy
skills, especially in reading. It is very hard for them to understand things if
they are lack knowledge on how to read specifically in English language form.
As early as in lower grade, children should be taught how to read so they will
be able to comprehend the different forms of literature since according to the
other researches, it is more difficult to learn a new skill for adult students than
kids. Furthermore, if they are already skilled in reading, learning new things
like in different subject areas will be easier for them than those students who
can't read.

Annotation Language and Literacy program focuses on offering learning on how to
provide effective teaching to all students, including English language learners,
in academic areas. The program's goal is to incorporate reading and writing
into lesson plans, use technology in the classroom, and pair readers with
texts. Its purpose is to broaden everyone's literacy knowledge and
understanding as they build a foundation in language and its application
across varied people and subjects. Furthermore, participants are expected to
be equipped to adopt successful literacy practices that help students from all
backgrounds learn at the end of this session at the end of this program.

Reflection/Understanding:

We are all aware that literacy skills, such as reading, writing, listening,
and speaking, are vital skills that are necessary to be prepared in any
situation. As future teachers, we understood how important this program is to
consider, as it will enable us to be successful teachers to students.
Furthermore, this will not only provide with the foundation of knowledge but
will also provide guidance on how to be excellent educators. On the other
hand, teachers must enroll in this program for it will help them to be
knowledgeable and equipped teachers since we believe that "Teachers can’t
give what they do not have" and "Teachers must develop their knowledge to
give what should be given and accomplish what should be done."
