and Subtraction of Decimal Numbers
This Self Learning Module (SLM) was designed and written with you in mind to help you master
the lesson on Solving Routine or Non-Routine Problems Involving Addition and Subtraction of
Decimal Numbers Including Money Using Appropriate Problem-Solving Strategies and Tools.
The scope of this learning material focuses on the many different learning situations.
Moreover, the language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of learners. The lessons
are also arranged following the standard sequence of the course. Hence, the order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

This module contains:

Problem-Solving Strategies and Tools

It is divided into two sub lessons, namely:

Lesson 3.1 – Solving Routine Problems Involving Addition and Subtraction of Decimal
Numbers
Lesson 3.2 – Solving Non-Routine Problems Involving Addition and Subtraction of
Decimal Numbers

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. solve routine or non-routine problems involving the addition of decimal numbers
including money;
2. solve routine or non-routine problems involving subtraction of decimal numbers
including money;
3. solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of decimal numbers including
money; and
4. solve 2-3 step word problems involving addition and subtraction of decimal numbers
including money.

Niño and Eliah wanted to have a surprise for their

mother’s birthday, so they planned to save money
from their weekly allowance.
Let’s analyze and solve the problem.
Niño saved Php 250.65 from his weekly allowance.
Eliah saved Php 186.75.
How much money did they save altogether?
Follow the four step-plan to solve the problem.

First, read and understand the problem.

It is the amount of money they saved altogether.

b. What are the given facts?

These are the Php 250.65 Niño’s savings and Php 186.75 Eliah’s
Plan savings.

Lesson 3.2. Solving Non-Routine Problems Involving Addition and
Subtraction of Decimal Numbers

Read, analyze, and solve the problem.

Mother spent Php 54.75 for a loaf of bread, Php 256.15 for
some canned goods, and Php 486.25 for meat. If she had
only Php 46.35 left, how much money did she have at first?

Follow the four step-plan to solve the problem.

Know.
- Identify the question. - It is the amount of money Mother had at first.
- Identify the relevant - She spent Php 54.75 for a loaf of bread,
facts. Php 256.15 for some canned goods, and
Php 486.25 for meat. She had Php 46.35 left.
Plan.
- Choose a strategy. - Working backward.

Solve.
- Perform the strategy. -Start with the amount of money left. Add this
amount to the cost of items bought.

Answer: Mother had Php 843.50 at first.

Application:

Read, analyze, and solve.

Grace added some soil to her collection of cacti planted in pots. She mixed 4.5 kg of
sand with 5.5 kg of soil. Then, she used 2.4 kg of a mixture to pot some cactus plants.
How much of the mixture was left?

Know:

a. What is asked?
It is the amount of the mixture that was left.
b. What are the given facts?
These are 4.5 kg, 5.5 kg, and 2.4 kg

Plan:
What is the hidden question?
What is the total weight of the mixture?

What is the number sentence?

(4.5 + 5.5) – 2.4 = n

Solve:
Add the kg of sand and soil.

meters. If the dressmaker has 5 meters of cloth available, how many meters of
cloth will be left?
3. To go to the grocery store, Alice and Andy rode a distance of 1.375 km and walked
0.18 km. How far did they travel?

3. Mrs. Manalo is preparing for a birthday celebration. Upon checking her stocks, she
found out that she has only 35.7 kg of meat. She sent her son to the market to buy
some more. Then she had 69.26 kg of meat in all. How many kilograms of meat
did her son buy?

4. Tony sells native lampshade Php 99.99 each and makes a profit of Php 10.00 each
lampshade. The wholesale from which he buys the lampshade makes a profit of
Php 15.00 each lampshade. How much does the lampshade cost at wholesale?

5. Rey has three 10-peso coins, two 5-peso coins, five 25-centavo coins,
three 10-centavo coins, and twelve 5-centavo coins. If he will buy a toy
worth Php 36.65, how much will be left of his money?
