1. What is power in your own understanding in the context of a community?

For me, power means having the ability to act strongly and influence over
others. In the community, those who have power is granted the ability to control
the rest of the community members. Aside from that, they have the ability to
influence the choices and decisions of other people.

2. At home, who shows power? Who is always showing a command? Who does
most of the decision making? How does/do this/these person/s show power at
home?

At home, my parents show power among us the most. The commands


and the decision making is however is always controlled by my mother. She
shows her power at home by having an opinion always for our decisions and lays
commands like who should do the house chores and what we should do as a
human being.

Activity 1: Comprehension Construct


1. A community has a sociological construct.
The statement above means that a community has a set of human
experiences, attitudes, and perceptions between its members. Not only behavior,
but actions focused on individuals’ common desire, ideals, conviction, and
meaning. An example is money. Money is the idea of currency; it is an example
of a social construct since people in the community have decided to value it.
People revolves around money, and pretty much everything is controlled by the
idea of money.

2. A community has fuzzy boundaries.

This idea means that a community has area boundaries resulting from the
internal structure of space and how this applies to the external structure.
Although there are boundaries, people in a community still manage to interact
with people outside their own community. An example is when someone in a
certain community marry someone from the other community. This is just a
common part of human interactions.

3. A community can exist within a larger community


This statement relates closely to a famous quote by John Donne “no man is
an island”. A community is dependent on other community; no one is self-
sufficient. Districts, counties, ethnic groups, countries, and other boundaries are
examples of communities within larger communities. Marriages and other forms
of contact between villages on both sides of national boundaries are possible.
4. A community may move.
A community is not static. It is a dynamic group that adopts to changes in the
world. Hence, in that particular reason, we can conclude that a community may
move. Residents of the city may be physically mobile if the technology is not
focused on local horticulture. They may be herders who travel long distances
with their cattle. An example is when scarcity of food is present to the place
where a community lives, they can venture around into other places where food
is present.

Activity 2: Let’s Take a Mental Tour!


1. Who are the influential members of the community?
Aside from all of the politicians like the City Mayor, I found that some
professionals are also power players in the community. These are the doctors,
lawyers, high ranking teachers, police officers, and business persons. I found
them influential at certain point. I have encountered several personally several of
them and I am certain that they have an influence and inspiration to the
community.
2. What are the characteristics of these people?
From what I have observed, these people are graduates of a college or a
university. They are educated. Some of them are rich, intimidating, and they
show prowess. They are professionals to their field.

3. How do they influence the members of the community?

They influence the members of the community by being an inspiration for


the youth and to those who wants to pursue their education and wants a good
future. They are like a catalyst of hope and people that enlightens the future.
They carry a lit torch, waving it high enough so all the people and especially the
youth could feel and see its light.

Enrichment Activities
“The three elements of community are not acquired through our genes, hut through our
socialization.”
Based on what I have learned, community ideals are vital for both community
and personal identity; who one is largely determined by the values one holds. People's
judgments are made around three axes, all of which are based on what they experience
as children. This involve determining what is right and wrong, good and evil, and
beautiful and ugly based on social and cultural values. They are gained by our
socialization rather than our genes. This basically means that they can be re-learned,
and that our judgments can be altered.
Socialization is one of the most basic thing that develops a community. By
teaching people, the norms and expectations of a social community, socialization
prepares them to engage in that group. Teaching impulse control and creating a
conscience, training people to play certain social roles, and fostering common sources
of meaning and significance are the three main goals of socialization.
