A QUARILATERAL – is a polygon with four sides. It has four angles. The sum of the measures of the interior angles of a
quadrilateral is 360 ̊ .The symbol is often used to indicate a quadrilateral.

I. PARALLELOGRAMS AND ITS PROPERTIES


A PARALLELOGRAM – is a quadrilateral whose opposite sides are parallel.
Property #1: Both pairs of opposite sides of a parallelogram are congruent.
Example: In parallelogram QRST,
QT = 5x cm and
RS = (2x+15) cm.
Find the length of RS.

Property #2: Both pairs of opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent.


Example: In parallelogram HIJK,
m‫ے‬I = 4x+8 and
m‫ے‬K =6x – 12.
Find the value of x and the
measures of m‫ے‬I and m‫ے‬K.

Property #3: Any two consecutive angles of a parallelogram are supplementary.


Example: Quadrilateral WXYZ is a parallelogram.
What are the measures
of m‫ے‬W and m‫ے‬Z.

Property #4: A diagonal of a parallelogram divides the parallelogram into two congruent triangles.
Property #5: The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other.
Example: Quadrilateral GHIJ is
a parallelogram.

II. SPECIAL QUADRILATERALS AND THEIR PROPERTIES
PARALLELOGRAMS – are classified as rectangle, rhombus and square. These three are sometimes referred as special
quadrilaterals. Some other special quadrilaterals are trapezoids and kites.

1. RECTANGLE – is a parallelogram with both pairs of opposite sides that ae congruent. Each of the interior angle of a
rectangle measures 90 ̊.

PROPERTIES OF THE DIAGONALS OF A RECTANGLE


1. The diagonals of a rectangle are congruent.
2. The diagonals of a rectangle bisect each oher.
3. Each diagonal bisects the rectangle into two congruent triangles..

Example 1:
Quadrilateral CFED is a rectangle.If ER = (2x+3) cm
and EC = (8x – 2) cm, find the length of EC

Example 2:
Quadrilateral DEFC is a rectangle.
a. If m‫ے‬EDF = 3x – 10 and m‫ے‬CDF = 2x – 5 ,
find the measures of ‫ے‬EDF and ‫ے‬CDF
b. If ED = 79 cm and
FC = (12x – 5) cm, find x.
2. RHOMBUS – is a parallelogram with four congruent sides.

PROPERTIES OF THE DIAGONALS OF A RHOMBUS


1. The diagonals of a rhombus bisect each other.
2. The diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular.
3. Every diagonal of a rhombus bisects its opposite
angles.
4. Each diagonal divides the rhombus into two
congruent isosceles triangles.
Example 1:
Quadrilateral UVWX is a rhombus.
Find the measure of x.

3. SQUARE – is a parallelogram with four congruent sides and four congruent angles. Each of the interior angle of a
square measures 90 ̊. A square is both a rhombs and a rectangle.

PROPERTIES OF THE DIAGONALS OF A SQUARE


1. The diagonals of a square are congruent.
2. The diagonals of a square bisect each oher.
3. The diagonals of a square are perpendicular.
4. Every diagonal of a square bisects its opposite angles.
5. Each diagonal divides the square into two congruent isosceles triangles.
Example 1:
Quadrilateral ABCD is a square. Find the length of each side if DE measures 5 cm.
Property #1: Both pairs of opposite sides of a parallelogram are congruent.
Example: In parallelogram QRST,
QT = 5x cm and
RS = (2x+15) cm.
Find the length of RS.

Property #2: Both pairs of opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent.


Example: In parallelogram HIJK,
m‫ے‬I = 4x+8 and
m‫ے‬K =6x – 12.
Find the value of x and the

III. THE TRAPEZOID AND ITS PROPERTIES
A TRAPEZOID – is a quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides. The parallel sides are known as the bases of the
trapezoid, whereas the nonparallel sides are called its legs. The angles formed by a base and the legs are called base
angles.

An isosceles trapezoid is a trapezoid whose legs (nonparallel sides) are congruent.


Properties of an Isosceles Trapezoid:
1. The base angles are congruent.
2. The diagonals are congruent.

Example 1: Use isosceles trapezoid DEGH


at the right to answer the following:

a. Name the legs of trapezoid DEGH.


b. Name the bases of trapezoid DEGH.
c. Name the base angles of trapezoid DEGH.
d. Name the diagonals of trapezoid DEGH.

g. ∠ DEG≃¿ ¿ _________

Example 2: In trapezoid PQRS,


m‫ے‬R = 100 and m‫ے‬S = 5x+35.
Find x and the measure of ‫ے‬S.

Example 3: TUVS is an isosceles trapezoid,


If m‫ے‬U = 14x+13 and m‫ے‬S = 13+8x.
Find measure of ‫ے‬V.

The median of a trapezoid is the segment joining the midpoints of the legs. It is parallel to the bases of a trapezoid. It is
equal to one-half the sum of the lengths of the bases.

MIDLINE THEOREM
The segment joining the midpoints of two nonparallel sides of a trapezoid is parallel to the bases of
the trapezoid and its length is one-half the sum of the measures of the bases.

Example 4: MN is the median of trapezoid STUR

III. THE KITE AND ITS PROPERTIES


A KITE – also known as deltoid, is a quadrilateral with two pairs of adjacent sides that are congruent.

In kite ABCD, AB ¿ AD and


BC ¿ DC . AB and AD are its
diagonals.

Properties of an Isosceles Trapezoid:


1. The diagonals are perpendicular to each other.
2. One of the diagonals divides the kite into two congruent triangles.
The other diagonal divides the kite into two isosceles triangles.
3. One of the diagonals is a perpendicular bisector of the other.
4. One of the diagonals bisects the opposite angles of the kite.
5. Only one pair of opposite angles is congruent.
