Variations

The document discusses four types of variations: direct variation, inverse variation, joint variation, and combined variation. It provides the definition and formula for each type, as well as examples of how each type can be used to model real-world situations. It also gives examples of how to solve problems involving each variation type by setting up and solving the appropriate formula.

VARIATIONS

A. DIRECT VARIATIONS
- There is direct variation whenever a situation
produces pairs of numbers in which their ratio
is constant.

2.
3.

y varies directly with x

y=kx
Where k is the constant variation
Example :
1. An employees salary S varies directly as
the number of days d he has worked.
2. The cost C of fish varies directly as its
weight w in kilograms.
3. The area A of a square varies directly as
the square of its side s
Solving Direct Variations
1. If x varies directly as y and x = 35 when y
= 7. What is the value of its constant
variations? what is the value of y when x =
25?
2. Determine the constant variation of the
table below

3.

B. INVERSE VARIATION
occurs whenever a situation produces pairs of
numbers whose product is constant.
y varies inversely to x,
k
y=
x
, where k is the constant of variation.
Examples:
1. The cost c per person of renting a private
resort varies inversely as the number n of
persons sharing the rent.
2. The rate r at which a person types a
certain manuscript varies inversely as the
time t spent in typing.
3. The acceleration a of a car is inversely
proportional to its mass m.
SOLVING IVERSE VARIATION
1. If y varies inversely as x and y = 3 , what
is the value of its constant variation? And
when x = 4, find y when x = 6.

C. JOINT VARIATION
- Two variations are related directly.
a varies jointly as b and c
a = kbc, or

k=

a
bc

where k is the constant of variation.

EXAMPLE :
1. The area A of a parallelogram varies
jointly as the base b and altitude h.
2. The heat H produced by an electric lamp
varies jointly as the resistance R and the
square of the current i.
3. The volume V of a pyramid varies jointly
as the area of the base B and the altitude
h.
SOLVING JOINT VARIATION
1. z varies jointly as x and y. If z = 3 when x
= 3 and y = 15, what is the value of the
constant variation? And find z when x = 6
and y = 9.
2. The amount of gasoline used by a car
varies jointly as the distance travelled and
the square root of the speed. Suppose a
car used 25 liters on a 100 kilometer trip
at 100 km/hr. About how many liters will it
use on a 192 kilometer trip at 64 km/hr?
3. The area of triangle varies jointly as the
base and the height. A triangle with a base
of 8 cm and a height of 9 cm has an area
of 36 square centimeters. Find the area
when the base is 10 cm and the height is
7 cm.
D. COMBINED VARIATIONS
- Involves both the direct and inverse
variation
z varies directly as x and inversely as y
kx
zy
z=
k=
or
y
x
, where k is the constant of variation.
EXAMPLES:
1. The electrical resistance R of a wire varies
directly as its length l and inversely as the
square of its diameter d.
2. The pressure P of a gas varies directly as its
temperature t and inversely as its volume V.

3. P varies directly as the square of x and

inversely as s.
SOLVING COMBINED VARIATIONS
1. w varies directly as x and y and inversely
as v2 and w = 1200 when x = 4, y = 9 and
v = 6. Find the value of constant variation.
And Find w when x = 3, y = 12, and v = 9.
2. w varies directly as x and y and inversely
as v and w = 1200 when x = 4, y = 9 and
v = 6. Find the value of constant variation.
And Find w when x = 3, y = 12, and v = 9.
