Assignment No. 1 (Part A)

This document contains 9 questions for a fluid mechanics assignment. Question 1 asks students to calculate density, specific weight, and specific gravity given mass and volume of a fluid. Question 2 asks students to calculate how far mercury will depress in a glass tube. Question 3 asks students to determine pressure difference between two pipelines using manometer readings. The remaining questions ask students to use fluid properties and diagrams of systems to calculate various pressures, tensions, and densities.

Assignment No. 1
Subject Name: Fluid Mechanics-I Subject Code: CIEN-2102
Total Marks : Due Date: 22-11-2019
Q No. 1
I. A fluid mass occupies 2 m3. Calculate the density, specific weight, and specific gravity if the
fluid mass is a) 4 kg b) 8 kg c) 15 kg
II. The specific weight of a fluid is 11 200 N/m . Calculate the mass contained in 2 m3

Q No. 2
Mercury makes an angle of 130o with respect to the vertical when in contact with clean glass. How far
will mercury depress in a clean, 10-mm-diameter glass tube if σ = 0.467 N/m.
Q No. 3
A manometer connects an oil pipeline and a water pipeline as shown in figure. Determine the
difference in pressure between the two pipelines using the readings on the manometer. Use SGoil=0.86
and SGHg=13.6. Assume the weight of air is negligible.

Q No. 4
A closed, 5-m-tall tank is filled with water to a depth of 4 m. The top portion of the tank is filled with
air which, as indicated by a pressure gage at the top of the tank, is at a pressure of 20 kPa. Determine
the pressure that the water exerts on the bottom of the tank.
Q No. 5
A closed cylindrical tank filled with water has a hemispherical dome and is connected to an inverted
piping system as shown in Figure. The liquid in the top part of the piping system has a specific gravity
of 0.8, and the remaining parts of the system are filled with water. If the pressure gage reading at A is
60 kPa, determine:
(a) The pressure in pipe B, and
(b)The pressure head, in millimetres of mercury, at the top of the dome (point C).
Q No. 6
For the inclined-tube manometer shown in figure below, the pressure in pipe A is 0.6 psi. The fluid in
both pipes A and B is water, and the gage fluid in the manometer has a specific gravity of 2.6. What is
the pressure in pipe B.

Q No. 7:
A homogeneous, 4-ft-wide, 8-ft-long rectangular gate weighing 800 lb is held in place by a horizontal
flexible cable as shown in figure. Water acts against the gate which is hinged at point A. Friction in
the hinge is negligible. Determine the tension in the cable.
Q No.8:
The 18-ft-long gate shown in figure is a quarter circle and is hinged at H. Determine the horizontal
force, P, required to hold the gate in place. Neglect friction at the hinge and the weight of the gate.

Q No.9:
An irregularly shaped piece of a solid material weighs 8.05 lb in air and 5.26 lb when completely
submerged in water. Determine the density of the material.
