Underdogs begin title playoffs today

GAMES TODAY (Philsports)

5:15 p.m. - Alaska vs Sta. Lucia (KO for 3rd)
7:30 p.m. - San Miguel vs Shell (Game 1)

BOTH entered the semifinals as underdogs, both

recovered from 1-2 deficits and both are exponents of
what is now called a scientific brand of basketball.
San Miguel Beer and Formula Shell share so many
things in common it‟s so hard to tell which team has got
the edge in the best-of-seven PBA Commissioner‟s Cup
finals series which starts today at PhilSports.
* Advance Story (Background News)
The only thing that the Beermen have which
the Zoom Masters don‟t have is their deep
bench, which includes Fil-American rookie Danny
Seigle.
However, the Zoom Masters boast of a
championship experience as this is their fourth
straight appearance since last year, winning two
of them - the 1998 Governor‟s Cup and the 1999
All-Filipino Cup.
“We may not be the biggest team, we may
not be the strongest team, but we have the
biggest heart,” said Shell Coach Perry Ronquillo
after beating Sta. Lucia Realty in their sudden-
death duel last Sunday

*How to write a
sports story?

Just like any other news

story, a sports story has a
lead and body.
*A. The Classic 5w’s
appear in the sports lead
as:

Who won? Against whom?

By what score? Where?
and When?
Example: (Volleyball story)
The hard-hitting spikers
asserted supremacy over the
aggressive but watchful
netters as they scored 15-8,
15-11, 15-9 decision, Sept. 7
on the school ground.
B. (name of Team A) +
(verb) + (name of Team
B) + (final score) +
during the (name of
tournament) + (When)
The fast-breaking
Bacolod City Lioness
edged Iloilo Tigress, 95-
41 in an exhibition game
held at the Iloilo Sports
Complex, Monday.
Example: (Basketball story)
* LEAD
The fast-breaking Baguio City
High School Yellows edged
Baguio Optical Athletic Club
Blacks 47-41, in an exhibition
game held at the Teacher’s
Camp basketball court this
afternoon.
SUPPORT LEAD
*
R. Sable breaking loose to
score 16 points in the last
minute after the Black defense
broke down carried his team to
victory.
*Details / Body
It was an exciting
game all the way with
both teams tying it up,
20-20, in the first half.
* At one point in the Game,
the Blacks led by as much as 4
points, 25-21, only to err a little
later after the combined efforts
of Sable and Valdez rendered
them helpless. It was then that
Sable poured in 6 points and
Valdez 4 points and the Yellow
led, 31-25
* G. de Leon, pouring in 18
points, 12 of them in the
second half, could not do
well to score more after he
was double-teamed by R.
Villanuava and J. Catbagan.
* Black Guard J. Torres,
fouled out in the last 5
minutes of play when he
could not stop the barrage
of points by Sable.
