3.1 AIM
Todeterminetotaldissolved andsuspendedsolidsinthegivenwater
samplewith the stipulationsasperIS: 3025(Part16&Part 17).
3.2 INTRODUCTION
Thetermtotaldissolvedsolidsrefertomaterialsthatarecompletelydissolvedinwater
.Thesesolidsarefilterableinnature.Itisdefinedasresidueuponevaporationoffiltera
blesample.Thetermtotalsuspendedsolidscanbereferredtomaterialswhicharenot
dissolvedinwaterandarenon-filterableinnature.Itisdefined
asresidueuponevaporationofnon-filterablesampleonafilter paper.
3.2.1 ENVIRONMENTALSIGNIFICANCE
Dissolvedminerals,gasesandorganicconstituentsmayproduceaesthetical
lydispleasingcolour, taste and odour.
Somedissolvedorganicchemicalsmaydepletethedissolvedoxygeninthere
ceivingwatersandsomemaybeinerttobiologicaloxidation,yetothershaveb
eenidentifiedas carcinogens.
Waterwithhighersolidscontentoftenhasalaxativeandsometimestherevers
e effectuponpeoplewhosebodies arenotadjustedtothem.
Highconcentrationofdissolvedsolidsabout3000mg/Lmayalsoproducedist
ressinlivestock.Inindustries,theuseofwaterwithhighamountof
dissolvedsolidsmayleadtoscalinginboilers,corrosionanddegradedquality
oftheproduct.
Estimationoftotaldissolvedsolidsisusefultodeterminewhetherthewateriss
uitablefor drinkingpurpose,agricultureandindustrialpurpose.
Suspendedmaterialisaestheticallydispleasingandprovidesadsorptionsite
sfor chemicalandbiological agents.
Suspendedorganicsolidswhicharedegradedanaerobicallymayreleaseobn
oxiousodours.
3.3 PRINCIPLE
Awell-mixedsampleisfilteredthrougha standardglassfiberfilter,
andthefiltrateisevaporatedtodrynessinaweigheddishanddriedtoconstantweighta
t179-181 C.Theincreaseindish weight represents thetotaldissolvedsolids.
Awell-
mixedsampleisfilteredthroughaweighedstandardglassfiberfilterandtheresidueret
ainedonthefilterisdriedtoaconstantweightat103-
105 C.Theincreaseinweightofthefilterrepresentsthetotalsuspendedsolids.Ifthes
uspendedmaterialclogsthefilterandprolongsfiltration,thedifferencebetweentheto
talsolidsandtotaldissolvedsolidsmayprovideanestimateofthetotalsuspendedsoli
ds.

3.5 SAMPLEHANDLING ANDPRESERVATION
Preservationofsampleisnotpractical.Becausebiologicalactivitywillcontinueafter
asamplehasbeentaken,changesmayoccur duringhandlingandstorage.
Analysisshouldbeginas soonaspossible.
3.5.1PRECAUTIONS
Thefollowingprecautions shouldbeobservedwhileperformingtheexperiment:
WaterorWastewatersampleswhichcontainhighconcentrationsofcalcium,
chloride,magnesiumorsulfatecanrapidlyabsorbmoisturefromtheair.
Suchsamplesmayneedtobedriedforalongerperiodoftime,cooledunderpro
perdesiccationandweighedrapidlyinordertoachieveareasonable
constantweight.
Weshouldbeawareprolongeddryingmayresultinlossofconstituents,partic
ularlynitrates andchlorides.
Volumeofsampleshouldbeadjustedtohaveresidueleftafterdryingas100
to200mg. It ismainlytoprevent
largeamountofresidueinentrappingwaterduringevaporation.
Sampleswithhighconcentrationsorbicarbonaterequireadditionaldryingat
180ºCtoensurethat all of thebicarbonateis convertedtocarbonate.
3.6 PROCEDURE
3.6.1 TESTING OFSAMPLEFOR TOTALDISSOLVEDSOLIDS
Tomeasuretotaldissolvedsolids,takeacleanporcelaindishwhichhas
beenwashedanddriedinahotair ovenat1800C foronehour.
Nowweightheemptyevaporatingdishinanalyticalbalance.Let’sdenotethe
weight measuredasW1=………g.
Mixsample well
andpourintoafunnelwithfilterpaper.Filterapproximately80 -
100mLofsample.
Usingpipettetransfer75mLofunfilteredsampleintheporcelaindish.
Switchontheovenandallowedtoreach105°C.Checkandregulateovenandf
urnacetemperaturesfrequentlytomaintainthedesiredtemperaturerange.
Placeitinthehotairovenandcareshouldbetakentopreventsplatteringofsam
pleduringevaporationor boiling.
Drythesampletogetconstantmass.Dryingforlongdurationusually1to2
hoursisdonetoeliminatenecessityofcheckingfor constantmass.
Coolthecontainerinadesiccator.Desiccatorsaredesignedtoprovideanenvi
ronmentofstandarddryness.Thisismaintainedbythedesiccantfoundinside
.Don'tleavethelidoffforprolongedperiodsorthedesiccantwillsoonbeexhau
sted.Keepdesiccatorcovergreasedwiththeappropriatetypeoflubricantinor
dertosealthedesiccatorandpreventmoisturefromenteringthedesiccatoras
thetestglasswarecools.
Weshouldweighthedishassoonasithascooledtoavoidabsorptionofmoistu
reduetoitshygroscopicnature.Samplesneedtobemeasuredaccurately,
weighedcarefully, and driedandcooledcompletely.
3.6.2 TESTINGOFSAMPLEFORTOTALSUSPENDEDSOLIDS
Mixsamplewellandpourintoagraduatedcylindertotheselectedvolume.
Applysuctiontofilterflaskandseatfilterwithasmallamountofdistilledwater.
Pourselectedvolumeintofiltrationapparatus.
Drawsamplethroughfilterintofilterflask.
Rinsegraduatedcylinderintofiltrationapparatuswiththreesuccessive10mL
portionsofdistilledwater,allowingcompletedrainagebetweeneachrinsing.
Continuesuctionforthreeminutesafterfiltrationoffinalrinseiscompleted.
