Rainbow Johnson recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the '80s and the constant dilemmas she and the family members had to face over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves. Bow's parents, Paul and Alicia, decide to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs to better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new life, Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they're perceived as neither black nor white. The family's experiences illuminate the challenges of finding one's own identity when the rest of the world can't decide where you belong.

While it needs more time to establish its own comedic voice, mixed-ish and its appealing cast are off to a sweet and smart start.

Dr. Shantel Gabrieal Buggs Bitch Media Even as mixed-ish reflects familiar aspects of my childhood, there's still much to be desired. Mar 15, 2021 Full Review Eric Deggans NPR I love the premise of this misfit family trying to find where they fit in America's confusing, hypocritical racial hierarchy. And the cast, featuring Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tika Sumpter as Rainbow's parents, often shines. Nov 23, 2019 Full Review Hannah Giorgis The Atlantic Mixed-ish falls into the trap of framing its protagonists as pioneers of mixed-race consciousness, rather than inheritors of a long and complex history. Oct 28, 2019 Full Review Mariha Morales TV Fanatic Santamonica is quickly becoming a favorite character. I'm not sure it's her age or blunt tongue, but she made me laugh this entire episode. The witty one-liners have me laughing out of my chair. Rated: 4.7/5 Nov 26, 2019 Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba I trust that the talent behind the series created by Kenya Barris, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Peter Saji will work out the kinks, but it's definitely in the wait-and-see category. Nov 7, 2019 Full Review Sharronda Williams Pay or Wait I just love the whole cast. Nov 7, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A really fun and enjoyable show! Much better than I thought it would be Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I have never gone out of my way to find how to even give feedback about anything on tv. But this show is the best thing ever!!!!! So nostalgic and HILARIOUS!!! I literally cant stop laughing out loud even the neighbors can hear when I am watching Mixed-ish. Whoever is writing this is the most gifted. I cant even start about the actors...we all know Tika and Mark-Paul are talented, but my God what about aunt Dee-dee and White Grandpa and Santi!!!!! Wow!! Yes, Rainbow is amazing too and Yohan! The storyline is so real! But the family values shown in this series is beautiful! Its a family trying to figure it out but determined to stick it together through the painful realities so many are still in denial about. I love this show so much and believe everyone, all shades, can truly enjoy and be introspective about in their lives. I could only hop that this show stays on the air for 7 seasons and beyond like Friends and Seinfeld and all other timepieces. This is a timepiece of the 80s! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This television brings up a ton of social issues that no one really ever talks about. There are plenty of shows out there that tackle single-race social issues, but few are ever dedicated to biracial social issues, and the stigma behind interracial couples. This one does exactly that, it dicusses many struggles and the prejudice encountered by interracial couples back in the 80s. It weaves real-life events into the show to make the audience really feel and understand what was going on at that time, and why society was different back then. Such as who the president was, and other historical events, black families and white families living in the same neighborhoods, and how interracial families were sometimes rejected from both sides each for different reasons. In many scenes, the show will pause, and elaborate on particular things (you could say they dumb it down a little) so that both uneducated children, as well as adults, can better understand that there is actual terminology behind all of this, which will help give them some more insight into the series. I watched it with my parents (A couple who met and were married in the 80s) and were really able to relate to the show. In addition, it feels especially genuine having Tracee Ellis Ross narrate the story, someone who can likely relate to everything coming about the series coming from a biracial background (aside from growing up on a commune). To be honest, forever whatever reason they switched out the actor playing the father, it might have been a good turnout. Mark Paul Gosselaar seems to portray his character quite well. As for the children, you get to watch how they struggle to find their own identities in school, and how some give into to conforming, while one (Rainbow) tries to fight the social division society has put in place. By the way, for a 7-year-old, Mykal-Michelle Harris is a total stitch. She portrays the role of Santamonica very well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I really wanted to like this show, being mixed myself, but the show is just plain stupid. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Every episode was very entertaining and meaningful topics throughout. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member It feels good just to sit and enjoy family entertainment—the dynamics and culture mirror my own family's. I know many are complaining about what the show is not, but I love it for what it is. It's an opportunity to laugh with my family and reminisce about an era that was a pivotal time for all mixed families. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
