Critics Consensus

Stylistically bold and beautifully acted from top to bottom, Adolescence is a masterclass in televisual storytelling and a searing viewing experience that scars.

Brian E This was a brilliantly made work of art, a story that demanding its own telling from the very first moment. The cast did a searingly good job and the cinematography was riveting, brilliantly supporting the claustrophobic experience that is adolescence in the age of social media. Social media, which is poison to our souls. I've heard many reviewers talking about online extremism and right vs. left perspectives, but the truth is - adolescence has always been a special kind of hell, which we used to survive because those who went through it were a resource for those coming after them. But when kids are left to their own devices ... remember Lord of the Flies? That, for all its horror, was a pre-internet work of fiction which could not possibly have anticipated where we are now. Children, our children, are no longer being raised by us, but by their peers. Imagine being surrounded by the most vicious packs of gossips imaginable, 24/7 and you might begin to understand the pressure children are under. I enjoy the internet for the most part, because when I was young it did not exist. My sense of self was formed prior to this poisonous age in which we live, so, like most adults I can handle the vile detritus which makes up the vast majority of the sludge circulating online, but kids ... they simply cannot form a coherent, balanced world view in the face of this. Remember, seeing someone humiliated or hurt activates the same mechanisms in the brain as suffering such injury. Imagination is neurologically similar to action undertaken in reality and while an adult can impose the distinctions of reality upon the felt, for kids this is exponentially more difficult. For all we've gained in convenience, had I a magic wand I would end social media altogether. Again, it's poison to the soul, against which our children lack even the dubious inoculations of adulthood, inadequate as they are. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Ric O It makes you feel all types of emotions. Every episode feels very different but that last one was heartbreaking. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Aldis H This is as flawless a piece of cinematic work as I have ever seen. All the acting is stellar, but Owen Cooper should be up for every single award that exists. The fact every episode is one long shot is a mind-blowing achievement, and to have the actors all put in performances like this in that situation is ... you just don't do it, except for the Brits, who are and have always been the best actors, singly and ensemble (Long live the Bard). Head and shoulders the best in the biz. This work is a shattering tragedy that will be with me the rest of my life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Kams A The other side- the family of the accused, what they go through is brilliantly shown. A must see for every parent and every child. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Luis V Es una serie que nos ayuda a comprender los tiempos actuales, donde las complejas dinámicas adolescentes son un peligroso enigma. En el debemos proteger a nuestros hijos Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Jesse D The filming style is intriguing, but sadly that's about all this show has to offer. The first episode is fast paced and highly entertaining but it just goes straight downhill after episode one. Episode 4 was so terrible I turned it off halfway through and don't care what happens.
