Jenghis Y Terrible - So cheesy and ridiculous!!! Rated 0.5/5 Stars •  Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Josh D Alex Rider Season 1 is what happens when you take a perfectly ordinary teenager, throw him headfirst into a world of espionage, and watch as he somehow doesn’t immediately perish in a dramatically inconvenient way. It’s a slick, fast-paced adventure that somehow manages to be both thrillingly modern and delightfully old-school, as if James Bond had a rebellious teenage nephew who never asked permission before saving the world. Otto Farrant plays Alex with just the right mix of wide-eyed innocence and terrifying competence, making it entirely believable that MI6 would see a schoolboy and think, Ah yes, that’s exactly who we need for this life-or-death mission. The action sequences are sharp, stylish, and surprisingly intense, proving that even a teenager with a backpack can outrun heavily armed professionals if sufficiently motivated. The supporting cast is fantastic, with villains who are just the right amount of sinister and allies who look permanently exhausted from trying to keep Alex alive. Ultimately, Alex Rider Season 1 is a ridiculously fun ride, filled with gadgets, danger, and enough twists to make your GPS give up entirely—and honestly, isn’t that exactly what a spy series should be? Even though it mostly follows the books, there are a few parts that don't follow the books and also make no sense. The casting overall is alright, but the castings for Jack and Sabina are just utterly terrible. Jack and Sabina from the old Stormbreaker movie fit much better with the books. The new castings for these two roles specifically are just... Bad. Smithers looks nothing like he's described in the books, which may make it difficult if the show reaches the plot of Scorpia Rising, but the change is likeable enough that it's honestly a welcome change. Sometimes the casting for Alex can seem a bit out of place because of how ordinary he comes off, but honestly, him being ordinary isn't really a bad fit. Overall though, acting is really well done from most of the roles. The major differences made in the plot are more of an annoyance than anything, though. Skipping Stormbreaker is forgiveable due to already having the movie, so I understand. And they seem to mostly integrate this well into the show, so I have no complaints here. But when a crucial moment in Point Blanc is skipped altogether in order to have more time with the random guy shooting at Alex beforehand, it's a poor move. Alex saving Friend and rejecting her is such a crucial part to the first book. Also Kaira's implementation is really odd, and neither the casting nor the character makes for a good love interest either, which seems to be attempted. I also don't see any reason to skip Skeleton Key. It may not be my favourite, but it's still a part of the series. Other than major missed points and add-ins from the books though, a really great retelling in this show. It's enjoyable cause it has this juvenile Bond vibe going on, but if any reviews suggest this is a polished well-crafted show, they're nuts. The director seems fixated on dark rooms, everyone's wandering around with these yellowish dim lights. The characters are cartoonish...from the Ghostbuster's secretary lady to the ascot-wearing evil Dr. Greif! And aside from Tom, the supposed high-school-age characters look like they're all 28 years old. But we're watching it. Does it have the brilliant dopiness of the legendary "Money Heist"? No. But it'll do...not much else on. Enjoyable sometimes intense thriller that works for its genre being fresh enough for a great binge. Clearly doesn't have the budget to waste that some other shows do, however, what they do have they use well. Good characters with a grounded storyline that builds satisfyingly enough.
