The Gilchrists struggle with everyday problems -- with one big difference, their head of household is also the leader of the free world. Between entertaining foreign dignitaries, holding secret Cabinet meetings and dealing with emergencies, the president's family must also face everyday issues like a grown son moving in and becoming one of the administration's biggest liabilities. Teenagers who are too smart for their own good and a stepmother who struggles to connect with the children add to the mix. Despite their extraordinary setting, the Gilchrists prove that, at the end of the day, people are just people.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Broad but likeable, 1600 Penn unfortunately doles out its jokes unevenly and lacks the cutting wit necessary to meet its satirical aims.

Molly Eichel AV Club Family comedies have become classics and thrived based on similarly simple ideas and switching such basic tenets, like blended families and differing socioeconomic backgrounds, but at least those shows were funny. 1600 Penn is not. Oct 24, 2018 Full Review Lori Rackl Chicago Sun-Times It's not ground-breaking or cutting-edge, and it's by no means the funniest show on TV. But it has the potential to get more lovable with time if viewers vote to give it a chance. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 17, 2013 Full Review Hank Stuever Washington Post In another time - perhaps those fallow years after The West Wing - 1600 Penn would have been a pleasant respite. Dec 17, 2013 Full Review Randy Dankievitch Processed Media [A] poor excuse for a low-concept sitcom, unable to muster a funny moment or emotional connection whatsoever. Rated: F Feb 20, 2020 Full Review Ross Bonaime Paste Magazine It just feels like a thrown-together idea, a way to combine different types of people with varying outlooks into a relatable sitcom in the world's most famous house. What it does is create a scatterbrained and relatively uninteresting show. Rated: 4.5/10 Oct 24, 2018 Full Review Kelly West CinemaBlend While 1600 Penn aims for goofy at times in terms of the humor, the cast is great and there's potential for the show to settle in as something fun and different from your standard family-focused sitcom. Audience Member Well written, well acted...story lines that are all too rare these days Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This show should have gotten better reviews. Not only did it have the star power of Josh Gad and Bill Pullman, but the premise was solid, and the supporting cast was terrific. What happened here? New president Dale Gilchrist (an acceptable performance by Pullman) and Emily Nash-Gilchrist (played excellently by Jenna Elfman) are trying to raise four very different children, while also trying to run a country. Skip (in what I consider Josh Gad’s finest role) is a 27-year-old man-child who comes home to the White House after many years at college, while Beka (played straight by Martha McIsaac) is a giant nerd who dreams of following in her father’s footsteps. They are nigh-constantly assisted by press secretary Marshall Molloy (the hilarious Andre Holland), who is forever trying to keep a lid on Skip (and the rest of the family)’s antics. It’s a solid comedy that was sadly overlooked in its time. I doubt you will see a Kickstarter to revive it anytime soon, but I have found it very rewatchable, and a neat twist on the family sitcom formula.
