The $1 million March Madness wager between a pro gambler and an artificial-intelligence site will be decided by the winner of the Duke-Houston game in the Final Four. The Vegas bookies say the gambler, who picked 5 1/2-point favorite Duke, should win. The AI platform 4C Predictions, which picked Houston, says that’s why its smarter than them. The bottom line: both pro gambler Sean Perry and the 4C’s AI program have done very well over the first 60 games of the tournament. Perry has missed only 13 picks. AI has missed only 10. They both picked all the Final Four teams correctly.
Creating and sharing deceptive media made with artificial intelligence is now a crime in New Jersey and open to lawsuits under a new state law. Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation Wednesday making the creation and dissemination of so-called deceptive deepfake media a crime punishable by up to five years in prison. The measure also establishes a basis for lawsuits against perpetrators. New Jersey joins a growing list of states enacting measures taking aim at media created using generative AI. At least 20 states have passed similar legislation that targets such media involving elections.

A bitcoin investor is headed to space with three polar explorers on the first flight to carry people over the North and South poles. SpaceX launched the four Monday night from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Chinese-born entrepreneur Chun Wang bought the entire flight from Elon Musk's SpaceX. Wang won’t say how much he paid for the 3 ½-day ultimate polar adventure. He took along three guests: a Norwegian filmmaker, a German robotics researcher and an Australian polar guide. It will take them 46 minutes to fly from pole to pole from their targeted 270-mile-high orbit.

Scientists have developed a device that can translate thoughts about speech into spoken words in real time. Although it’s still experimental, they hope the brain-computer interface could someday help give voice to those unable to speak. A new study on the technology was published in the journal Nature Neuroscience on Monday. Researchers described testing the device on a 47-year-old woman with quadriplegia who couldn’t speak for 18 years after a stroke. Doctors implanted it in her brain during a clinical trial. More research is needed before the technology is ready for wide use.

An airman stationed in Alaska has been charged with child exploitation. Prosecutors say David Ibarra paid a young girl in Long Island, New York, to send him explicit images. Prosecutors say the 31-year-old man posed as a 13-year-old boy. They say he befriended the 9-year-old on TikTok, then moved the conversation to the children's gaming platform Roblox and ultimately to a phone messaging system. They say he paid nearly $200 in more than a dozen payments to get the girl to send him explicit videos, texting her specific instructions. The suspect was arrested in February and is being held pending trial in New York.
A company that specializes in early wildfire detection has developed a new, AI-based drone that it says will help speed up the detection, location and monitoring of fires. The Silvaguard drone by Dryard Networks was presented Thursday in Eberswalde outside of Berlin as wildfires driven by extreme heat and climate change are becoming more common globally. The drone will deliver infrared video and works in combination with a second fire detection system that the company developed earlier and that’s already being used in several countries. That fire detection system, called Silvanet, is designed to detect wildfires at the smoldering stage using solar-powered gas sensors connected via a wireless network.

Serbia's populist government is facing increased public scrutiny over reports that it used a sonic weapon against a peaceful crowd during a massive anti-corruption rally in the capital, Belgrade, on March 15. Witnesses say the sound, like a whiz or a jet, was frightening and sparked panic among the hundreds of thousands taking part in the protest. Sonic weapons use sound waves to incapacitate, disorient or harm individuals by harnessing acoustic energy. Serbia’s security agencies have issued daily denials that they used such a device against demonstrators. Rights groups say they've lodged a case at the European Court of Human Rights, which has given the Serbian government till the end of the month to respond.
Trump downplays national security team texting military operation plan on Signal as a minor 'glitch'
President Donald Trump is downplaying the texting of attack plans to a group chat that included a journalist as “the only glitch in two months” of his administration. Trump told NBC News on Tuesday it “turned out not to be a serious one.” Top national security officials including Trump’s defense secretary texted plans for upcoming military strikes in Yemen to a group chat in a secure messaging app that included the editor-in-chief for The Atlantic. This was reported by the magazine Monday. The National Security Council says the text chain “appears to be authentic.” Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg says two hours after he received the details of the attack on March 15, the U.S. began launching airstrikes.
