Who was Joseph Priestley?
Joseph Priestley
was an English scientist and one of the key developers in the discovery
of oxygen (1774-1776). He was born in Fieldhead, near Leeds (Yorkshire),
and later moved to Birmingham, London and eventually Northumberland
(Pennsylvania). Priestley was a clergyman and political theorist and
he wrote over 150 books that advanced liberal, political and religious
thought at the time.
Joseph Priestley discovered the gas oxygen, which he
called dephlogisticated air, he discovered the eraser, and he
even discovered carbonated drinks! Next time you drink a can
of fizzy pop you have Priestley to thank.
