It is near Lake Sevan whilk is a lairgest lake in the Caucasus. Its population is estimatit tae be 11,987 as o 2008. In auncient times it wis kent as Mets Kznut, but frae 1830-1922 it wis cried Nerkin Gharanlugh an in 1926 it wis chyngit tae Martuni in honour o the first Soviet premier o Armenie, Aleksandr Myasnikyan, whase nom de guerre wis "Martuni".
