Off-TV Play é um recurso do console de oitava geração da Nintendo, o Wii U. Assim como todos os consoles de videogame, o Wii U usa um console e um controlador de jogo para manipular uma imagem na tela de uma televisão. A diferença é que o controlador, chamado Wii U GamePad, possui sua própria tela para exibição de imagens. O termo "Off-TV Play" refere a quando um jogo é jogado apenas na tela do controlador, sem o uso da televisão.[1]

Contexto

O Wii U foi anunciado oficialmente na E3 em junho de 2011, quando foi divulgado que o controlador de jogo contaria com uma tela sensível ao toque, similar a um tablet.[2] A Nintendo anunciou que o principal foco do console seria a capacidade de exibir a imagem vista na televisão através da tela do controlador, permitindo continuar o jogo caso a televisão seja utilizada para outros fins, ou caso o jogador precise se afastar da televisão.[3] As descrições oficiais foram dadas durante a E3 de 2012; o controlador foi denominado Wii U GamePad, e o conceito de jogar através de sua tela, Off-TV Play.[4]

Em jogos suportados, não é necessário que a televisão esteja conectada ao Wii U; o Wii U pode operar em modo Off-TV Play desde que esteja conectado a uma fonte de alimentação.[5] Entretanto, como o processamento é realizado no console e a imagem é transmitida ao GamePad, o usuário ainda deverá estar no raio de transmissão para que o recurso funcione.[3] Nem todos os jogos suportam Off-TV Play, visto que alguns jogos dependem conceitualmente da interação entre a tela da televisão e a do Wii U GamePad, tais como Nintendo Land e ZombiU.[6][7][8] Além do mais, jogos do Virtual Console e do antecessor Wii em Wii Mode não são compatíveis com Off TV Play.[9]

Em janeiro de 2013, a Nintendo anunciou que títulos Virtual Console adquiridos diretamente do Nintendo eShop incluirão a opção de utilizar Off TV Play.[10]

Recepção

O conceito recebeu críticas em maior parte positivas. CNET elogiou o recurso como algo "no mínimo fantástico (...) pois evita o monopólio da TV durante o jogo — algo que uma pessoa que não vive só pode apreciar. Para as residências em que a TV principal vive em constante demanda, o recurso vem como uma benção."[21] Porém, uma grande preocupação é que esse recurso não é obrigatório, o que significa que as desenvolvedoras podem optar por não disponibilizá-lo em seus jogos; logo, na teoria, o recurso pode se tornar obsoleto.[21] Kotaku também o elogiou, dizendo ser um bom recurso para os que gostam de se "multiatarefar", pois libera a televisão para outros fins.[25] Techspot o descreveu "um luxo que poucos queriam, mas que acabou sendo algo maravilhoso de se ter", embora tenha dito também que o fato de o recurso se ativar automaticamente ao desligar a televisão pode surpreender ou confundir novos usuários.[13] Destructoid o elogiou por ser exatamente o mesmo que jogar na televisão, só que "com portabilidade limitada sem custo adicional. Difícil achar defeito nisso."[26] GamesRadar elogiou o recurso por ser perfeito ao ávido telespectador, mas criticou o modo de não haver um padrão para ativá-lo, tal como um botão próprio.[27] A IGN declarou em sua análise do Wii U que, com respeito à experiência single player, preferiria que o jogo todo pudesse ser transferido ao GamePad em vez de utiliza-lo junto à televisão.[28]

Alguns críticos comentaram sua qualidade superior de imagem durante Off-TV Play,[13] enquanto outros demonstraram preocupação devido ao tamanho pequeno da tela, o que torna difícil enxergar pequenos detalhes na imagem.
