Borrowed from German geschwind (late 16th century), a prefixed variant of Middle High German swind, from Old High German *swind, from Proto-Germanic *swinþaz. Thence also English swith, Gothic 𐍃𐍅𐌹𐌽𐌸𐍃 (swinþs).
