Chzz, first, thanks for your prompt reply. You stated that my new temporary page does not have citations. I can certainly fix that. If I run them by you later on and you sign off on them, will you be able to get my page out of the temporary category?

You also said that the entry might not be notable enough for inclusion in wikipedia. However, other books by well known writers like McKibben have brief summary pages, such as The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan, etc.

Thanks a lot for helping out a newbie. It is much appreciated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kajuble (talkcontribs) 17:02, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. Yes, of course, I will help in any way that I can.
The book may not be notable enough; it will have to meet inclusion guidelines. The fact that other articles exist (and they may not meet the guidelines) does not help; in brief, we know that there are lots of unsuitable articles on Wikipedia, and we're working hard to fix that - please help out - but the fact they exist is no defence for adding more. See WP:OTHERSTUFF.
You said that those other articles are brief; I haven't actually checked them. That might also be appropriate in this case. For example, I doubt very much that there are multiple, independent reliable sources to assert all the details given about each chapter - as these facts would therefore be unverifiable, they would not be suitable for inclusion. Some dispensation is permitted in the case of a brief plot-summary, which can be directly attributed to the book. This is all, of course, assuming that notability can be established in the first place.
Just one more quick note - when you leave messages (like the above) please remember to "sign" your name by putting ~~~~ on the end of it.
Cheers, and please ask for help as much as you need to.  Chzz  ►  17:48, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

thank you

Hi Chzz. I just wanted to say thank you again for being so polite in your responses to me as I was obviously annoying in my lack of knowledge ;o) I would like to set up a page for Arlington Enterprises Ltd. they are a talent agency who deal with lifestyle presenters. can you let me know if this is ok? it will of course be unbiased and not include contact details. just a brief history of the company and who is represented etc.Thank you AE13 (talk) 20:50, 8 July 2009 (UTC)AE13

It probably warrants an article, if it has sufficient reliable sources; check WP:ORG. As you're (presumably) involved, please read WP:BFAQ - hence I'd suggest making the article in a non-live area; I'll explain that part on your talk page in a minute.
When you think that you have a decent article, you should submit it in articles for creation. If the refs check out and it's unbiased, then there is no reason that it would fail. Good luck, and please ask for help as often as you need to.  Chzz  ►  22:06, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

submission of [x+1]

Chzz, I asked before your break (welcome back) about the submission of an article on [x+1], which was handed over to you by Passportguy.

Wondering what the status is?

He added a note saying company history had no third-party references, but didn't realize that was required?

Please respond, thanks.

Michael O'Brien (talk) 19:18, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

I wrote the following response on your user talk page on 5 July;
"All articles must have "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" (per WP:N), and I was unable to locate any such sources for this article. If you are able to find some, please let me know."
If you need further information, do contact me again. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  20:00, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Spotlight

Of course I remember you and your assistance! I just joined Spotlight. I'm not sure I'm accessing the right place: Does it all occur on the discussion page (currently Marco Polo). Or is there another site to which I'm supposed to navigate to participate? Thanks! Mrs. Peel (talk) 02:15, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

It mostly happens on IRC, that link you clicked earlier. It's a way to talk to other editors, 'live' as it were.
I notice you joined, and someone said hello to you, but you left; you could've just typed 'hello' in the bottom or something. The IRC is an online chat, where we discuss ideas for fixing up the article - that's the idea behind it all. There are usually a few people online discussing it.

Try this link again, and this time, just say "hello" in the bottom bit, and press enter. Hope to see you soon!  Chzz  ►  02:40, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

P.T. Brent

Regarding conflict of interest on P.T. Brent. No, it is not me. It is someone I met who had started the Pearl Harbor Visitors center and who is also a former marine like myself. I decided to find out more about him and in doing so, realized that he was quite a noteworthy person in my eyes and in those of many other people. Therefore I decided to make him my first topic on Wikipedia since I enjoy writing.

Sorry, have been sitting here doing other things in the meantime as well as doing research into the how to's of Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nightfira (talkcontribs) 04:39, 11 July 2009 (UTC) Nightfira (talk) 05:03, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Rivkin article

Excuse me, but your responses were extremely difficult for me to understand, and I do understand markup language.

1) I do have a References List in the article with external sources. Is there something wrong with that list?

2) When you suggest that I remove the list of articles (which was meant only to be factual), I can describe the types of articles, as well as the volume. When you said to include references, do you mean some external links to examples or the bibliographic listing of that example? How many examples are too many?

3) I have no idea about the live talk-- do I enter in your name or mine?

Many thanks. Few things intimidate me, but I am nearly ready to abandon writing in Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr. Susan Hardwicke (talkcontribs) 19:06, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi there :-) My comments are designed to be constructive, so I hope that you'll take them with that intent; I will help you as much as possible.
1. We like references to be 'in-line' - a little [1] with a link to the reference at the bottom. This is particularly important in bio articles. It's pretty easy to do this; you simply a) put (for example);

This is a fact. .

Then, in the references section, you need to put reflist. That's it; the rest is automagic. Give it a try, and if you have trouble, ask.
2. Rather than a long list, I suggest a paragraph or so; something like, "Chzz has written for many publications, including New Scientist, Nature, and Which sausage?." A single reference to an article in each would support each of the facts. There are no hard and fast rules about such things, only guidelines; we rely on common sense. In my opinion, anything from a single line (like that), up to a few paragraphs discussing the publications, would be OK - but a huge list would not be OK. Descriptive text is preferred over lists. Even extremely prolific authors only have a short summary of their works.
3. Live talk, put in any name you like - it's just the nickname that you will be known as on the chat. It's prob best to put "DrSusan" or something, so we can identify you better.
Cheers,  Chzz  ►  20:53, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. I don't usually do vandalism patrol, but the changes that were made by that account to the articles that I watch were most certainly vandalism. Perhaps there are multiple users of the IP. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:40, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

logos in user sandbox

Hello,

thank you for telling me not to use logos in my user sandbox. I have read as much as I could about writing articles, but I did not notice that. Actually, I was writing an article, and wanted to see how it looked like using a personal page before moving it to the public, normal article area. I guess then that the procedure to write an article containing a logo is to write it first in a personal page without the logo, and then to move it to the normal article area, and only then to upload the logo and edit the article to link the logo to it. Is this right?

Thank you -Angelo Borsotti —Preceding unsigned comment added by Borsotti (talkcontribs) 08:44, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, a non-free image that is not used on any article will be deleted after 7 days, so there is scope to upload it and check how it looks, before making the live article. Personally, when working on such articles, I put a 'placeholder' image, such as File:example.jpg.  Chzz  ►  11:45, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

BDTaylor's username block

I'd say it's got something to do with the fact he signs the posts ben @ LOZIO and uses "we" when referring to the company. Gives it a 'role account' sound. That said, uw-spamublock is for username and spam concerns. So if he pledges not to spam and requests a username change (maybe the admin can forward it to a crat or someone can make it on his behalf at WP:CHU), then he might earn himself a second chance. It's a really cool video game The idea of a portal is to help readers and/or editors navigate their way through Wikipedia topic areas through pages similar to the Main Page. In essence, portals are useful entry-points to Wikipedia content. At present, there are Featured portals number featured portals, of a total of 544 portals on Wikipedia.  Chzz  ►  19:40, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I assume that you mean the article in User:Zee-Mei/Ireland-Portugal-Spain. I'm not sure that this is an appropriate article, because Spain and Portugal are completely separate countries; surely this is covered by Foreign relations of the Republic of Ireland, Foreign relations of Spain, and Foreign relations of Portugal; is there any specific reason that you think a separate article is warranted? Hi Chzz, Here is the latest version of the article on the Third Bardor Tulku Rinpoche with an expanded list of references: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ktowie/test I am ready to make it live. Could you help me find instructions on how to do it?

Marco Polo

Hi , i edited it because i have a DK history book & it says 1292 , if it is incorect then it is proberbly a misprint , i apologise if it is incorect. Would you be able to tell me , "where did marco polo have his famous visit in 1292?" Thanks Kidflyer1 (talk) 20:21, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

I think that the DK book is incorrect; according to "The World Book Encyclopedia" (which we cited there), and several other sources that I've checked, their arrival back in Venice was in 1275. In an early manuscript copy of the book that Marco Polo wrote, it says;

[...]thanking God who had delivered them from so great labors and infinite perils, they went on a ship and came safe at last to Venice; and this was in the year 1295

— "Marco Polo, From Venice to Xanadu", page 315; full details of the book are listed in the article Bibliography.)
I think that the question may be incorrect; his most famous meeting was with Kublai Khan, in Xanadu - and scholars estimate that to be between 1271 and 1275, as stated in the stories section of the article, and further detailed in footnote 4. So, the answer to your question is probably Xanadu (but they got the date wrong).
According to Marco Polo's own book, in 1292, they were in Cathay (which is modern-day China); they were staying with Khan, and wanted to leave; during that year, the Khan allowed them to go along with a party to Persia, and from there, they made there way back to Venice, arriving home in 1295.

re: photos + BLP

Hi Chzz, Thank you very much for offering to help with my mini-project.

You said: “we could only add information about him that has been reported in newspapers, magazines, books, or such other places.”

But isn't the inventor himself, the most authorative source of info?

I am not writing about opinions, just want to include 2-3 photos, and table showing how instrument is tuned.

Regarding his bio, am happy to restrict it to dates/stats: age, education, date of invention, and years associated with his band. Wikipedia has many fine editors who can expand it later.

If you think this is reasonable, I can make sample pages for you to check next week.

Thanks again, Mitch3000 03:52, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Sure, I'll be happy to check it over. The pictures should be fine, but the table might be considered original research, if it has not been published elsewhere; the problem is, if we can't verify the information somehow, then it shouldn't appear - and if the only place to check it is the inventors own website/book, then that's not an independent secondary source of information.
Good luck with it; I hope to hear from you again soon.  Chzz  ►  03:18, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you! From: Ktowie

Thank you very much, Chzz. I appreciate giving me a chance to do it myself. One more thing I need to ask. I would like to have titles: Bardor Tulku and Bardor Tulku Rinpoche redirect to the page Third Bardor Tulku Rinpoche. Could you help me with that?

Oh, btw, someone left a message for you in my previous message section, I think. I think I got notified about it which may mean you have not.

Thanks again. Basia (Ktowie) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ktowie (talkcontribs) 00:35, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Yep, redirects are easy, and cheap. Just make a page in the normal way, by going to Bardor Tulku or whatever. Create that page, and just put one line in it; you can quickly make this code by clicking
#REDIRECT Third Bardor Tulku Rinpoche
Just save that, and that's it. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  01:05, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Yes, someone did leave a note in the above section, which I've now separated out.

Rlemusmail

Hi Chzz,

Thanks for the note. I am having trouble using that help page.

I just wanted someone to look at my rough draft in my userpage section of a band I am putting on Wikepedia to see if the references

Basically a Kennedy Center National Smithsonium Museum Band description and Washington Jewish Week Article, were sufficient for printed publications references.

Also.. the way are typed in seems funny because when I look at the page they do not seem to come up.

Is it possible for you to proofread my work online in my userpage section...?

Thanks,

Rebecca Lemus —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rlemusmail (talkcontribs) 20:02, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

I made comments about all of the sources earlier, on your page. In summary;
a) You probably shouldn't be writing that article, if you have a conflict of interest
b) The current references are not sufficient
I will put a guide to referencing on your own user talk page. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  01:20, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
CHzz.
Your communication is very helpful. I am also learning a bit more about these talk pages.
I do not think that I am a conflict of interest if I am a fan of the New Klezmer Quintet and not a member of any kind.
ALso, I am looking at other Klezmer Bands that are listed and I do not see any of the reference citations. Am I missing something in seeing where they are referncing their sources..?
My example is Beyond the Pale.. which is listed as a Band under Klezmer Bands under Klezmer.
Thank you for your help. I want to pst this but I do not want to be nominated for deletion.
Thanks again.
-Rebecca —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rlemusmail (talkcontribs) 14:35, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Hello again!
I'm glad it helps; a couple of points about how to use talk pages;
 • When you start a new message on a talk page, you should create a "new section" at the end of the page, by clicking on "New section" at the top, and put in a subject.
 • You can reply to existing messages within the section by editing it. You should indent your reply with a colon (:), and then two colons, three, etc - as I have done here. This makes the thread easy to read.
 • At the end of each message, please "sign" your name, by putting ~~~~. This will add your username, and the date/time.
 • When you talk about an article, please give a link to it, by putting the article name in square brackets - for example, by putting Beyond the Pale (band), which would appear like this: Beyond the Pale (band).
(I hope this isn't too much info, I hope that it will help!)
Now, to answer your questions,
 • If you're not connected with the band, just a fan, then that's fine - you don't have a conflict of interest. I just wanted to check, because it's often a problem.
 • The article on Beyond the Pale (band) is indeed unreferenced; there are lots of such articles on Wikipedia, and we hope to fix them eventually. Just because such things exist though, does not mean that new articles without references would be OK. That particular one was made back in 2007, and so far seems to have escaped much attention; I've now marked it up as needing references, so hopefully someone will add some.
 • It would be a good idea for you to make the article in your own user space, and then someone can check it before you make it live. I will explain how to do this in a further note on your own talk page.  Chzz  ►  15:02, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

thanx again you really helped!! there should be more wikipedians like you.

OK then! Sorry, but I'm not actually sure who you are... forgive me, but at any one time, I'm involved with several conversations with new users, and lots forget to sign...
I'm guessing, from the picture, that you are The.smudge (talk · contribs)? Whoever you are, you forgot to log in, and the sig did not work.
The problem was, you put a <gallery> without a corresponding </gallery>. That meant that the rest of my talk page was treated as part of a gallery, and that's why your ~~~~ did not work. For future reference, you should just use this type of syntax to put a single picture: - which is what I changed it to, above.
Because that message was unsigned, so it got auto-signed (by an automated program, a 'bot'). And because you were not logged in, it put the IP address rather than your Wikipedia username.
I've looked back in the history of my talk page, and hopefully sorted things out. Hope this helps, cheers,  Chzz  ►  22:51, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

please talk to all the editors involved before hatting a discussion

Chzz, next time, before hatting or collapsing a discussion, you should get the agreement of the involved editors first. I was part of the conversation you collapsed on the request of another editor, who has a pattern of wanting to collapse any conversation when he doesn't like where it is going. Quackwatch is a source which was used for this article and that is why it was brought up on the discussion page. Whether it is a reliable source for chiropractic can be considered a discussion appropriate for this article, as long as it doesn't get too far afield. Which is where it was going once BullRangifer started attacking me and I called him on it. --stmrlbs|talk 05:58, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

I merely performed a housekeeping task, to make the page somewhat more manageable, and in the spirit of WP:BOLD. I did not remove anything, and you are quite welcome to revert my actions if you disagree with them. In regard to the discussions, all I can do is suggest that all parties endeavor to discuss the content of the article itself, and refrain from making comments on other editors (as you did above), even if they do it to you.
Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  06:17, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
If it was just a housekeeping task, why ask use adminhelp to do it? Because he wasn't just hatting his own comments. To hat other people's comments, it is just common courtesy to ask if they agree. --stmrlbs|talk 07:22, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Chzz, thanks very much for all your help.

I think I am all set for now but will try to go back to my and other articles to improve them, as you say. And I'll try to remember to sign my posts :-)

Ktowie (talkcontribs) 22:08, 22 July 2009

Hi there! Sorry you had troubles leaving me that message - you did nothing wrong. It was because another new user had left a 'tag' open in the message previous to this; that's why it all went strange. I've looked back in the history, and sorted things out now.
Yes, "cheers" is an English expression; I'm in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.
Good luck with your further editing!  Chzz  ►  22:51, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

It takes some getting used to as far as using Wikipedia, so I am not surprised things happen. I am glad you noticed my having tried to leave a note. Thanks for all again. Let me see if I can sign this properly now :-)
Ktowie (talk) 21:15, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Yep; it's a bit of a steep learning curve. On the bright side, once you "get it", it works on any page, on any wiki, because they all work the same way. So, it's a good skill to acquire, I think.
Those sort of problems tend to happen all the time on my talk page, but I'm used to it; I help lots of new users, and everyone forgets to sign, or create a section, or something at first. But the best way to learn these things is by doing them. I think. If you ever have problems, don't sit there confused - please ask for help; there are lots of people quite happy to help other users on Wikipedia - after all, collaboration is its greatest strength.
With regards to the article, it's looking better. I just added a notice about 'tibetan script', because most readers (like me) will not have that font installed, and hence the header you added comes out garbled. Perhaps the best answer to this issue longer-term would be to create an image file of the Tibetan script instead, and use that.

Message from PasoAPaso

thanks

PasoAPaso PasoAPaso (talk) 22:56, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome. And this may seem a bit of a pointless reply, but I thought it might help illustrate userpage things. When you leave a message, please create a new section (with the "new section" tab), and put in a subject line.
When replying to a message, we can indent the comments by starting the line with a colon (:) - and then a further reply can have two colons, etc, thus forming a 'thread'.
Note that, when I reply, you won't receive any notification of it - so you need to check back. However, I will now put a quick note on your page to let you know that I've replied - which is another solution.  Chzz  ►  23:01, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again for your help! ;-) PasoAPaso PasoAPaso (talk) 01:09, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

DYK for Marco Polo sheep

Updated DYK query On July 25, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Marco Polo sheep, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Hi, thanks for the message. I have a membership to the Zoo and would love to help you out. Let me ask, though, and please excuse my ignorance, but is this a special type of sheep? If so, are you sure our zoo has one? I can take a pic or two or three, and can even try to take a video, if that would meet your sound request. -- MeHolla! 20:30, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Hiya; yes, it's a species of sheep, see Marco Polo sheep. It's currently (right now) on the main page, in the "Did You Know". Unfortunately, the only pic we have is a stuffed head!
The zoo website claims that they have these sheep.
So...yes, if you could get pics - or video, yep, would be lovely. Cheers!  Chzz  ►  20:50, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Page deletion

Well, I maybe followed your instructions re the page that you helped me with. The result seem to be here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Images_with_missing_articles/In_the_public_domain_by_age but what that means and what happens now I have no idea. --Dumarest (talk) 18:16, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Hiya, I think that there was a small problem with the listing - it was specified as Images with missing articles/In the public domain by age, instead of Wikipedia:Images with missing articles/In the public domain by age. I've changed that, and the listing now looks valid here; hopefully people will !vote over the next few days.
If you plan to nominate other things for deletion in the future, then you might want to look at twinkle, which is a tool that makes nominating things very easy.

conflict of interest?

I'm confused why you have said that I have a conflict of interest with an article? I don't understand. The only interest is that I tried to write a couple of articles and they were deleted so I tried to fix them and ask editors for help. I'm nearly afraid to write any article on wikipedia because even after investigating how to write wikipedia articles and putting a lot of work into them, my first tries were treated very agressively which seemed unfair. Another editor today told me I should try to find articles from more magazines when I went back to my sandbox today. So I found some recent references from musicweek when I googled Kerchoonz and looked under 'news' so I'm just trying to make the reference show up. I don't work for Music Week or Kerchoonz or anything like that so I don't understand why I would have a conflict of interest. I'm a legal expert.Cheaperbydozen (talk) 17:28, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Ralnon

Forgive me, fellow user, but I still do not quite understand your point. Could you point me exactly where exactly openly prohibits such messages? It is for another wiki, Chzz, not like for some Wikipedia-unrelated company or business corporation, and only from a desire to improve the said wiki and Wikia itself.

How am I exactly "damaging" the core of Wikipedia with such messages? They were sent to other users. Please, regardless of whether you and he are close, do you, for one, truly consider them "spam" or "advertising" as the one who threatened to ban me did? Perhaps you also firmly agree, but as for the recipents themselves, I fear we cannot be too sure. I mean, it was an friendly invitation, I swear, I never thought it would get this...extreme or out of hand. Forgive me if I am taking up too much of your time, but I am uncertain if it was absolutely necessary for my messages to be highlighted and erased in the first place. I mean, forgive my discourtesy, but could the other user, not simply have minded his own business? Or were they so offensive to him and Wikipedia he was forced to delete everything I have done, out of a kindness for users who have no place here? I mean, come on, I hate them as well, but there are vandals and rogues and users who abuse their powers pop up everyday...Am I so low in your eyes I am counted among them? The user was not involved with the series at all, yet he found it fit to closely monitor my edits and remove them with a whim. I understand I must respect the rules and policies of Wikipedia, but do Wikia's own projects mean less than nothing to people here? Then what is wikia's point, after all?

See the Secrets of Droon article, and the multiple issues it has been marked with for over three years now; do my actions so indisuptably warrant a "block" and for what precise reason? As I have tried to tell the first sysop, I am not very familiar with Wikipedia rules in comparison with those of Wikia's, and on Wikia I am very active. What do you suggest I do, then? I have not even dared to make one edit to a Wikipedia article other than my talk page after his kind messages, and I am uncertain still how to proceed. If you are merely tired at my complaints and think I should just f*** off, then kindly answer this: On Wikia, how does one publicize one's wiki? Was this route, like, out of the question? I am just weary of this endless displeasure at everything I try to do here. Don't worry, though, after this: I won't bother you or him again, so :) Goodbye. Ralnon (talk) 18:10, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

My friend, though I initially desired to simply allow random users, sysop or not, to assess the situation, even I am very tired of such a (at least what I thought) petty issue, and let it be as you say. I shall wait as long as needed, and I do hope you or others can explain more clearly to me. But I shall say this: Despite Wikia's flaws and weaknesses, I personally must express my doubt at threats at banning the first few minutes of a new account at the wikis there for issues similar to this one. I truly am confused and troubled at how much displeasure and chaos is caused by this issue, which I had not deemed even worthy of administrator notice...I mean, seriously, how do administrators here handle other, far more serious issues, I would not wish to know (no offense to you in particular). Nonetheless, I shall continue not to edit, and I shall continue your wait at replying and finding suitable users. Thank you for your patience. Ralnon (talk) 18:43, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. I'll do my best to explain.
Wikipe-tan says, Wikipedia is not the only wiki.
This is the English Wikipedia. It happens to use some software, called wiki. Other sites use that software too. Wikipedia is not wiki.
We - the community on English Wikipedia - have come up with certain policies and guidelines.
One of these policies is Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. You can read that full policy by following that link, but I will try to extract what I believe to be the salient points in this case;
Wikipedia is not a soapbox, [...] or a vehicle for propaganda and advertising. This applies to [...] talk page discussions, and user pages. Therefore, content hosted in Wikipedia is not:
 1. Propaganda, advocacy, or recruitment of any kind, commercial, political, religious, or otherwise. [...] Note: Wikipedia pages may not be used for advocacy unrelated to Wikipedia [...]
 1. Advertising. [...] Wikipedia neither endorses organizations nor runs affiliate programs. [...] Those promoting causes or events [...] should use a forum other than Wikipedia to do so.

I hope that this is clear. Wikipedia is not wiki; wikia is a commercial site; advertising and promotion are not permitted on Wikipedia. Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  18:53, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

...Okay, crystal clear. Great. I think I got it now. Even though I had thought Wikia and Wikipedia were both so connected that such messages would not matter, it seems many here have different thoughts. Um, thank you. I...appreciate it. I won't bother you again, but I just need to check one last time. Bye. Best wishes, Ralnon (talk) 19:14, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

A New Article

Hi,

I'm trying to create an article on Anandita Dutta, also called Indian Chili Queen, the Indian woman who can eat and rub ghost chili on her eyes and also who had made to guinness world record. I have also given some important links. So would you please help me creating the article right on my test page? Please help.--Xeteli (talk) 03:19, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. I think you'll do fine creating such an article. Some comments;
 • Be careful of WP:ONEEVENT. I think that there is enough background information about this person, but you need to ensure you do not only document the world record; you need to give (referenced) details about her background, previous notability, and that sort of thing.
 • Please use in-line referencing for all the facts, to say where the info comes from. I will explain how to do this on your talk page.

Thanks

Thanks for your advice re images. It reminded me of when Wiki had more of a community feel. I felt slightly overwhelmed by a user using me to up their edit count a fair bit! All I did was upload something to Wiki rather than Commons! I have been here for three years plus so I seem to have built up a decent collection of a) images that are redundant b) images that are useful but orphaned c)images that are useful but missing something. I'm really not a newbie though you would think so from my talk page Francium12 (talk) 20:30, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

No problem at all. If the images are really junk then yes, CSD them - but it's probably not worth the effort. I'd noticed the over-templating on your page, that's why I poked my head in, and mostly because I didn't like the 'ask an admin' advice, which - I expect you're already fully aware - isn't really the best approach. Anyway...I've spoken to the user that put all the templates there about DTTR and suchlike.
I know what you mean about 'community feel'; it's a pity it doesn't happen more often. I'm a firm believer that it can work that way; for example, I've been heavily involved in the recent re-launch of spotlight, which is a very interesting collaboration. Anyway - I'll leave you in peace; shout me any time, about anything. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  20:41, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

My article name still showing up red on links

Hello again, I am noticing that all of the links to my article are still showing up red, indicating to me that there isn't an article being recognized? Does it have to go through an assessment first? Hmmmm, now that I hit preview, it is blue here but not in other articles. I am sure I have changed everyone's spelling to be the exact way...) Now, I am really baffled.

Also, the picture on the InfoBox looks different than the original- too long and narrow. You can look at the difference by going to DianeRR where the article still resides and compare it to Mulford B. Foster, the article's home. I like the cropped look (I didn't know how to do that and I got the picture from someone else)but it isn't a natural proportion. thanks.DianeRR (talk) 14:30, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, there. I'm jumping in at chzz's request.
Where are you seeing the redlinks (to, I assume Mulford B. Foster)? Were you, perhaps, looking at older copies of pages that you visited before creating the Mulford B. Foster article? I've created the Mulford Foster page as a redirect, so that may help.
As for the picture, it appears, to me at least, that chzz has fixed this already [1]. Do you understand the change that he made?
Thanks.—C45207 | Talk 06:15, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
I checked by searching, and found 5 articles that mention the person - they are all correctly linked to the article. They are Fosterella, Billbergia, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Bromeliaceae, Harry P. Leu Gardens, The Herbert Medal, and Amaryllis. I therefore suspect that you were looking at cached copies of the pages; if you did a refresh, the links should be OK. There is no assessment process; if you create an article in mainspace, it is immediately available to all users.
Regarding the picture, yes, it had a 'forced image size'. When you display a picture, it is possible to specify the exact size displayed, in pixels. In this case, it was specified as 250px. It is not recommended to specify the size of images - usually, it is preferable to let the users own browser decide what size to display; thus, I removed the size specification with this edit.
The new picture was one I created. I downloaded the original, and used photopraph manipulation software to crop it, transform it, and apply various colour/saturation/tone fixes.
Regarding the "Messed up last message", I checked back on your edit here. The strange appearance of your message was due to the line beginning with a space character. Lines that begin with a space
look like this; the text is 'commented' and does not wrap properly.
I corrected the problem by removing the space, here.
I hope that this answers your questions. Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  21:52, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Signing up to another Wikipedia

I may want to join the Wikipedia in another language (Kernewek) and am unsure whether to do this under the identical user name / password or different ones (my knowledge of that language is quite limited but the contributors will all understand English. Hiya. I note that you registered your English Wikipedia account on 27 February 2008 - therefore, currently, you do not have a unified account. More recently created accounts are automatically unified - meaning that the same username/password can be used on any of the sister projects.
Have a quick read of m:Help:Unified login#How to unify your accounts, and then, just go to Special:MergeAccount. Once your account is unified, you should be able to use the same username and password on all different language wikis - including Wikipedya Kernewek and Wikipédia francophone.  Chzz  ►  00:40, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

AfD templates

Thanks for your help - once I get the hang of it, I may offer a re-write of the instructions. They're a little hard to follow for first time PRODders.VsevolodKrolikov (talk) 08:43, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

I agree, it is hideously complex. There is a much easier method - use "Twinkle". In the Gadgets section of your Preferences page, tick the checkbox alongside Twinkle. This will add some tabs to your menu; when in an article page, one of them is "xfd". Click that, and it's very easy to automatically nominate articles for deletion. If you need any more help, let me know. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  08:54, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I used twinkle to PROD the original article; can it handle creating the correct templates on the AfD page once I open it up?VsevolodKrolikov (talk) 08:56, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, it does all of that for you automatically; you just choose "xfd" on the article, and fill in the details.  Chzz  ►  09:07, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Ah - I see what I did wrong. For understandable reasons, I pressed "PROD". xfd looked awfully dangerous as a button. Now I know what it does, I feel less intimidated.VsevolodKrolikov (talk) 14:27, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

The box at the top right is called an 'infobox' - a template, which lays things out in a new format.
When an image is not in the infobox, you display it with the code . The 'thumb' part makes it a 'thumbnail' picture. For more possibilities, see WP:IMAGE.

How to Make a New Page with the Same Name as an Existing Page

Chzz, cerberusrunning here. Thanks for your help with the Charles Dennis page. Also, thanks for the offer to work with "Spotlight." I will, regretably, not have the time to participate and assist at this time. My next goal is to create a new page called "Going On." Going on is one of the writer/director's plays. However, there's already a page with the same name. Please, will you advise me how to add a page with the same name, but on a different subject. Is it OK to contact the Wikipedia helpers that are on Wikipedia,or would that be redundant and inefficient? Please let me know. Thanks again. cerberusrunning

July 30, 2009 Thursday. = Cerberusrunning (talk) 01:02, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi. You would make the article as something like Going On (play), and then you could add an appropriate hatnote to both articles. For example, you put something like this;
CD single by Gnarls Barkley

...which would look like this...

For more on that, see WP: HATNOTE.
Regarding asking for help - yes, of course, ask for help whenever you need it. Projects are good - maybe you could join WikiProject Literature, and/or some of the related projects.  Chzz  ►  07:25, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

I asked some freenode staff, and they say that, when you connect, you should get a message telling you what to do. It will probably tell you to send an email to kline@freenode.net. You need to follow the instructions; if you can't see the notice, just send an email to that address. Sorry, there's nothing more direct than I can do - you have to speak directly to them. I hope you get it sorted out; hope to see you back soon.  Chzz  ►  16:17, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you

Hi, thanx for your help: not only you provided me with good advice regarding the question I made at my talk page, after coming here at your pages I have also reminded some of the reasons that forced me to leave this site: meat pictures and a strange sense of humour, latin mottoes, British-military-related stuff and British- Royals-like stuff (William Windsor-the goat in this case) and so on. It's really too much for my "primitive" mind, sorry.--Doktor Who (talk) 03:18, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

USS Massachusetts spotlight appearance

FYI, you are probably not aware of this, but there are several editors, including the person who nominated the article for the spotlight as well as myself who have been involved with the article and others like it for some time. See these two places: User:TomStar81/Operation Majestic Titan and Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Maritime warfare task force/South Dakota class battleship. The goal is to bring every single battleship and battlecruiser article to FA status, see the amount of work: User:The ed17/Sandbox2. -MBK004 03:47, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for that info MBK; I was hoping that this one would bring in some more people. The whole idea on spotlight is to focus our efforts and work together; with a wide mix of skills, we can do great stuff in a short space of time. It doesn't matter if people contribute in big or small ways; it's the principle of "Many hands make light work" - or spotlight, in this case. We've had pretty good success with other articles, esp. getting Marco Polo from a very tricky mess to GA. Let's see what we can do with this one over the next week. Hope to see you in the channel.  Chzz  ►  03:56, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the invite, but unfortunately I do not have the time at the present to make major content edits to articles and that situation does not look like it will change for quite a while, plus I have two projects currently in an incomplete state as well as three more I haven't even started. I am certainly available as a reference to provide advice to anybody interested (so please make that point known to anybody working as well as the links I posted above) since these articles have a very established format because of the FAs already written and the fact that the similar structure should be used for all, especially in anticipation of the Featured Topic nomination that will be forthcoming not only for the specific class that Massachusetts belongs to but also the massive 70+ article FT nom in a few years time. Also, I don't use IRC for other reasons. -MBK004 04:13, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks!

Here, thanks for your help!

Recent problems at Zoltan Kodaly

Hello again, I'm worried about what happened when I stepped in and revised this page (found it on the WP:Hungarian Culture so followed it up as major composers should have better articles). Then what I did got reverted and possibly done for the wrong reason: could you investigate or refer to right department please.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 06:16, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. I appreciate your sentiment (removal of excess links) - there do seem too many there, and I'll check over them now, and add a 'hidden comment' about not adding more. However...
 • Edit summaries are very important - please use them; even the best of edits can appear 'suspicious' if there is a strange edit summary. It is so much easier to see what is going on with an article when people use edit summaries properly.
 • If you make an edit, and somebody disagrees with it, stop right there. Talk to them. Start a discussion on the talk page, giving the reasoning behind you edit, then leave a note on their talk telling them about the disussion. Give policy reasoning for what you're doing, and try to get consensus. Almost all the edit war escallations on Wikipedia could be avoided if everyone did that.
Hopefully, you won't have any further problems with it; if you do, please let me know. Keep up the good work! Cheers,  Chzz  ►  08:59, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
Having now looked at the links, I have removed several (and explained it on the talk page), and clarified the others. Hope that helps. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  10:00, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for sending me the explanation: I just could not work out why each move just made it worse. It discourages me from straying too far from the kind of work I feel comfortable with and I had done the editing when very tired and should have given up. All the zzs were from not moving away from that key: I was hoping for a response of some kind from Who then=== and it never came until after I perhaps returned to the problem. Some editors have preferences about negotiating which I have not understood. Some of the eLinks content looked perhaps copy pasted (I know I changed it somehow). I don't create new articles very often though one I did recently looks fairly good. I am going to stay away for the time being. Admin work is not something I want to get involved in: is must be quite difficult at times.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 14:29, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

casa entry III

Hi again Chzz, I have just had a look at the entry you helped me create on the Victorian CASAs and have noticed that there's been a comment put on it that it needs more reliable sources to validate it. I have some URLs that I think will be suitable but want to know if they are what is required and I may need some help with putting them on. Can I impose upon you for help again? Thank you Peto. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Peto Australis (talkcontribs) 23:22, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Yes, please ask, if you have a specific question.  Chzz  ►  23:41, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

I have left the info I'd like to add on my talk page - I had a feeling that was the appropriate place for it. If that's the wrong place could you let me know and I'll drop it into here. When you get a moment could you have a look? Thank you again Peto Australis (talk) 22:46, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Making a Page with the Same Name

Thanks for the information on resolving the issue with Going On (play) and Going On (song). I've created a Disambiguation Page for Going On. I've also created a page for Going On (play).

I was going to rename the existing page called Going On, which is for the song, but didn't want to change it by "moving" it, it looked like it might break some links.

How do I change the name of the existing Going On page from Going On to Going On (song)?

After we've done that, I think I can take it from there. Thank You.

cerberusrunning 18:50, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Hiya. I quite like your new sig, but can you please add a link to your talk page to it? For example, cerberusrunning. Code for that is;
<font color="#660000"><i>cerberus</i></font><font color="darkblue"><i>running</i></font>
To rename a page, you just move it. Click 'move' at the top, give the new name, and a reason. It automatically moves the talk page, and creates redirects from the old name. If you have any problems, let me know. Cheers!  Chzz  ►  20:32, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
Update I notice now that you had a problem creating the new article (the 'speedy deletion' notice on your talk page; that was because the short article that you created was not valid. Remember that Wikipedia is 'live' all of the time. I have now created a valid short article about the play, Going On (play). I hope that you will be able to expand it further, with appropriate references. I have also added a hatnote to Going On, so that should take care of the issue of the two similar names - in this case, because there are only the two articles about a subject with the same name, a disambiguation page is not really necessary; the hatnote will suffice. I hope this helps; best of luck with it.  Chzz  ►  23:51, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Account Creation tool

Think you need to double check your sig at the toolserver - look at this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Loammo2bl Regards.    7   talk Δ |   08:24, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for spotting that. I'll turn it off for now, and try to work out what is happening. Also, re. that same user creation, please could you check it out a bit? I'm concerned that it might be connected to Loamobn (talk · contribs).  Chzz  ►  08:35, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you!

I didn't realize someone might actually create the archives for me! How totally excellent. Thanks!Scooge (talk) 08:58, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Oh good; I'm glad that you approve. It just seemed quicker than explaining it, and avoided the "Fiddle-Faddle" :-)
I note that you still have some notice templates about deletion etc, on your page - please feel free to remove any such things, once you've read them and dealt with them. You don't have to copy everything into the archive - although, if you want to, that's fine too.
You can add to the archive in the future by just cutting things from your talk page, and pasting them into the archive.
If you need help with it, give me a shout.  Chzz  ►  15:33, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you #2

Finally someone who really wants to help me. But what can we do if someone tries to delete the article again? Because I have no more issues and I was told IMdb is not a reliable source. But I will call you again if I have more troubles. Thank you again.Brazilian Man (talk) 16:55, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

I don't think that the article will be deleted - and certainly not 'speedy deleted' - because, even though I made a very short article, it contained references to reliable sources - I supported the IMDB listing with book references for two specific movies. If you could expand it, and add further info from reliable sources, that would be great. Google "Book search" is a good place to start (or even better, a visit to a library!). Cheers,  Chzz  ►  17:04, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
You may also find these templates handy to add verisimilitude to the External links section. :-) Happy Editing! — 141.156.175.125 (talk · contribs) 17:44, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks chzz

With regards to the WP Notability issue concerning my question as to whether Press Releases are reliable references.

I will copy and paste the the bit that I am still a bit foggy on..

From the WP:BAND page

Has been the subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent from the musician or ensemble itself and reliable.[note 1] This criterion includes published works in all forms, such as newspaper articles, books, magazine articles, online versions of print media, and television documentaries[note 2] except for the following:

Any reprints of press releases

It states any reprints of press-releases. So what about the "original" press release? Does that count as reliable source and justification for creating a whole new page?

Many thanks for your time.

Medisin (talk) 13:28, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

No; press releases are a primary source. It says 'reprints' to mean 'anywhere that the press release is used' - ie whether it is the original, or a news report based upon it.
Bottom line: it needs significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent.
 Chzz  ►  13:19, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks again Chzz

Thanks Chzz, better to be safe than sorry. Top stuff!
