Afro Tech, (also spelled as Afro-tech or AfroTech)[1][2] is a subgenre of house music which originates and is predominantly made in South Africa.[2][3][1] Afro Tech emerged in South Africa in the late 2000s.[4] South African DJs and music producers who pioneered and popularized the genre globally include Black Coffee, Culoe De Song, Euphonik, Zakes Bantwini,[5] Shimza,[6] and Da Capo.[7][8]
Characteristics
Afro Tech is a union of Afro house,[4] techno, and deep house[9]. It often includes a combination of techno sounds with South African percussion and other various African instruments.[10]
Popularity
In 2015, Black Coffee received the Breakthrough Of The Year award at the DJ Awards,[11] primarily due to his Afro Tech song "We Dance Again" featuring Nakhane. His win increased the popularity of the genre.[2][3][12] In 2023, "iPlan" by Dlala Thukzin debuted at number 1 on Billboard South Africa,[13] and on The Official South African Charts,[14] also surpassed 2 millions streams,[15] and achieved Double-platinum status in 2 weeks.[16][17]
