Mariam Shengelia (Georgian: მარიამ შენგელია;[3] born 14 May 2002) is a Georgian singer. She will represent Georgia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with the song "Freedom".[4][5][6]

Shengelia is a member of the Georgian music band Mix2ura.[7][8][9]
Early life
editShengelia was born on 14 May 2002[10][11] in Mingrelia, Georgia,[12][13] but until age of 10 was raised in Tbilisi, capital of Georgia.[12][13] Then with her family she moved to the city of Zugdidi.[14] She developed an interest in singing and performing during her childhood years. Shengelia attended the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, where she studied vocal performance and music theory.[15] Her early musical influences included a variety of genres such as pop, soul, and jazz.[16]
Career
editIn 2018, Shengelia gained national recognition as a semi-finalist on X Factor Georgia.[17][18][19] A year later, she finished sixth in the Geostar, which selected Georgia's representative for the ultimately cancelled Eurovision Song Contest 2020.[20][21][22] In 2020, she was scheduled to be a backing vocalists for Tornike Kipiani's song "Take Me as I Am," which was set to represent Georgia at Eurovision Song Contest 2020.[23][24][25] In 2021, she reached the semi-finals of the fourth season of The Voice Sakartvelo,[26][27] and in 2025, she finished in second place on Tsekvaven Varskvlavebi, the Georgian version of Dancing with the Stars.[28][29][30]
On 14 March 2025, Georgian Public Broadcaster announced that Shengelia would represent Georgia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel with the song "Freedom".[31][32][33]
Political views
editShengelia has been criticised for publicly supporting Georgia's ruling party, Georgian Dream, and participating in commercials and concerts that support it.[34][35][36][37] Shengelia said that by her participation in the concerts she wants to spread her main message, which is peace.[38] According to media reports, she originally took part in protests against the party in 2023 and shared a post via her Facebook account in 2022 proclaiming that she apologized for the actions of the Georgian government in the face of Russian invasion of Ukraine.[39][40][41][42]
