EXCLUSIVE: Comedian Joe List is partnering with Matson Films to bring two new projects to theaters: the documentary Tom Dustin: Portrait of a Comedian, marking his feature directorial debut, as well as his fourth special, Small Ball.
Tom Dustin: Portrait of a Comedian is set to hit theaters in Los Angeles and New York City on April 25, expanding nationwide on May 9. Meanwhile, Small Ball will screen in theaters nationwide for one night only on May 21.
The former project is an indie documentary, directed and produced by List, offering an intimate glimpse into his enduring friendship with fellow comedian, Tom Dustin. Through candid conversations on anxiety, depression, and addiction, interwoven with intimate comedic performances filmed in Key West, the film sheds light on the highs and lows of life in stand-up comedy and the complexities of lifelong friendship.
Showcasing List’s sardonic comedic style and self-deprecating humor, Small Ball finds him tackling themes of fatherhood, friendship, and the absurdities of everyday life shortly after the birth of his first child. Filmed at two separate Illinois Zanies clubs over the course of back-to-back evenings, the hour comes on the heels of List’s specials I Hate Myself, This Year’s Material and Enough for Everybody, which have garnered over 14 million views on YouTube alone. List exec produced alongside Willie Rockefeller, Derek Gildersleeve and Chris Burns. Originator Studios is the production company. Ghostrunner Records, Tony Deyo and Andy Hendrickson are distributing the audio version.

In a statement to Deadline on the distribution news, List said, “I am so overwhelmed with excitement to be releasing both my film and my comedy special in theaters across America. Going to the movies has always been my favorite thing to do since I was a little kid and I’m so proud to get to show these in a cinema. To me there is nothing more special than watching a movie in the dark with a strange group of people.”
The comic went on to joke, “I feel the same way about sex actually. Please come.”
A well-respected veteran comic based in NYC, List has also previously released the comedy albums So Far No Good and Are You Mad At Me?, which can frequently be heard on Sirius Radio, through Comedy Central Records. During his two decades on stage, he’s also earned a spot as a finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and starred in Season 2 of Netflix’s The Standups, with additional appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Conan.
The co-writer and star of Louis C.K.’s Fourth of July, an indie dramedy based on his own family experiences, List is also known for co-hosting the popular weekly podcast Tuesdays with Stories alongside comedian Mark Normand, as well as his own podcast Mindful Metal Jacket.
The comedian is represented by WME, Underscore Talent, and Garrett Legal.
