Hello. I uploaded Image:Captain and crew of SS Booker T. Washington.jpg on 25 May 2007. Today I found that the identical image Image:Ss-booker-t-washington-1943.jpg had already been uploaded on 4 April 2007. I'm not sure what to do about it. Elipongo 17:39, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Upload
I'm trying to upload an image on wikipedia with the same name of an image that already exists in commons, it's actually an update of the same image. I just need a local image on wikipedia (the update in commons will follow later on), and i can't upload it because it exists here, but it's been deleted in wikipedia so i can't use the "update image" option there. Neither can I make the update here because I've only just created an account. So, is there a way to somehow "unlink" the image that is uploaded here from the wikipedia project so I can upload it there. If not, is there a way to re/create a local (wikipedia) copy of the image so that I can update it. This is the image, it is only used in one article(you can check it, it's a stub actually), that's the article I'm trying to edit and I need acces to the new image. If there's any other solution, I'm listening.
Thanks in advance for any help. --B w raven 11:17, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
- Ask an admin on your local project to upload the image. That's the only answer (unless we delete the image at Commons). --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 02:54, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Renaming a category
I cannot find commons equivalent of Wikipedia CfD. Please let me know (cc my talk) how to rename Category:Psychiatric Hospitals to Category:Psychiatric hospitals. Another one: Category:Sports arenas of Mexico should be merged and redirected to Category:Stadiums in Mexico.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 18:05, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

i wish to translate this image Illu03 mouth.jpg, for the spanish wikipedia. is it possible?

Hi.
Sorry to bother, but since I'm not very comfortable with copyright rules, could some more eperimented user check if I was right to think that this image was {{PD-US}}.
Thank you very much, Poulos 21:56, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
- The note says that it was copyrighted in 1913; it is indeed PD-US. It was created by Underwood & Underwood; I don't know if you can tag it as PD-Old--it would depend on when they died, unless it's considered a corporate work. Either way, it's fine to tag it as PD-US if you're not sure, since it was made in the US by US nationals, and would thus be good to use in any jurisdiction that applies the rule of the shorter term. grendel|khan 19:02, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
Licensing query from user
Hi, can someone help User:Scaredpoet license the file Image:Uname MacBookPro OSX10-4-10.jpg, which is published under "The Apple Public Source License is the open source and free software license". (I don't know enough about it - user has put an ordinary (incomplete) deletion request on it as he is unclear of what is asked of him/her). Thanks. Deadstar 09:04, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know much about APSL and Mac OS but I believe this license does not cover graphical elements such as the decorations surrounding the terminal window. If the image is cropped so that only the terminal output is shown, there will no longer be any problem IMHO. — Xavier, 10:02, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
Copyrighted characters.
I was under the impression that we can't just draw copyrighted characters, even if we're not making a work that's directly derivative of a particular copyrighted drawing--that is, the copyright is on the character itself. What does that mean for drawings of the category that are themselves in the public domain, like those in PD Cartoon - Superman? Are they not allowable here, are they usable only under a restriction that we wouldn't like (no derivatives, for example), or what? grendel|khan 14:01, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Map
I have a copyright problem, which concerns this map. It's fan art, actually. It is based on the map in the books of fantasy author Robin Hobb. Robin Hobb gave premission to upload the map on deviantART, which makes it property of deviantART. I have the authorisation of the author of the map, Crooty, to post it here, but she has no clue about the copyright. Is there anyone who can help me?

I can't get the corrected pronunciation of Image:En-us-leitmotif.ogg to load properly. Each time I upload, the audio file plays the same as the original, both from here and from Wiktionary. However, each time I upload the corrected file, the older versions have the corrected audio file which they didn't before. What is going on?

Stock images from www.sxc.hu
Under what sort of license woudl an image, specifically this image from www.sxc.hu or any other image from this web site, be published under, and would it be applicable for Commons upload? The license agreement states it can be used for any purpose (excluding a few derogatory uses.) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.173.194.15 (talk) 01:31, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- Any images from that website cannot be uploaded, because under the royalty free link, it says this, in uppercase:
“ | SELLING AND REDISTRIBUTION OF THE IMAGE (INDIVIDUALLY OR ALONG WITH OTHER IMAGES) IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN! DO NOT SHARE THE IMAGE WITH OTHERS! | ” |
- Commons requires works to be able to be sold, used in any way, shape, or form, and redistributed. (→zelzany - framed) 01:49, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- See COM:SXC. SXC.hu images have just recently been removed entirely from Commons, because of their stupid rewording of the terms. - Well, I'm not 100% sure that it is in fact a copyvio, but it looks like that. I need an experienced person to check it. For example, this picture. --MKay 19:35, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Attribution
I have a couple of photos that I was going to upload to Commons (I spotted Wikipedia articles they could be useful in, but of course they would be free-licensed and usable for anything). I want to make sure that I am attributed personally - ie 'Photo by [http://davidarussell.co.uk David Russell]' in Wikicode - rather than just 'from Wikimedia commons' or requiring people to click on the thumbnail photo (for the larger image with its licensing page).
Is there any way (whether with a standard licence like the FDL, or with the Freelicense templates) to achieve this while still satisfying the free-license requirements of Commons? I seem to remember something about 'attribution in the manner specified by the author' in the Creative Commons licenses, but I'm not sure if the manner of attribution I have in mind would be acceptable here. Cheers. Cynical 10:43, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
- Within Wikimedia (Commons, Wikipedia, etc), there is a strong tendency to consider the automatic image link as "sufficient" attribution. So if you want to insist that Wikipedia articles with your images start having captions with your name, I think you'll find that an up-hill battle. (It's one that I personally wouldn't support. We don't footnote each paragraph in articles with the names of the authors, do we?)
- Outside of Wikimedia, you can put a notice on the image page suggesting to people how they should word any attribution to you. But because notification is not required by a free license, you won't necessarily know when or where your images are used. Many organisations and individuals are pretty careless w/r/t correctly crediting freely licensed media.
- Publishing material under a free license (and to some extent, just publishing on the internet) is somewhat like letting your babies go run wild in the forest. You can send them off with strict instructions about how they're to be cared for, but you can't guarantee those instructions will be respected or followed to-the-letter. It's a trade-off in control vs audience size, I suppose.
- cheers --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 03:07, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

- Hmm, you're the original uploader/author and you want it deleted? Why did you upload it under a free license in the first place? (Part of) the strength of free licenses lies in their being unrevokable (is that a word?), so I don't feel really happy about speedy-deleting it, especially since there's no other (privacy, copyright etc.) problem with it and the image is used in an article on en:. I'm not sure what procedure is about this, but one thing you can do is turn it into a regular deletion request. If you need help with that, feel free to ask me on my talk. NielsF ? It's allowed to used pictures from Wikipedia Commons as part of a Educational (non-commercial) TV program?

Assertion of copyright over digital copy of public domain images?
Hi, I would like to upload two images of paintings of James Smithson. One is a painting of Smithson when he was a student at Oxford which was painted around 1786 (i.e., 221 years ago) by an unidentified artist. The other is a portrait of Smithson by Henri-Joseph Johns painted in 1816 (191 years ago). I believe that both paintings are now in the public domain. However, the images available on the Internet were created by the Smithsonian Institution – the Smithsonian presumably digitized photographs of the paintings, or took digital photographs of the paintings. They have put the message "Digital Image (c) 1996 Smithsonian Institution" on the images. Are they entitled to assert copyright over what are essentially identical copies of images already in the public domain? Can these images be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons? Cheers, Jacklee 23:12, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
- We don't, generally speaking, recognize that sort of claim. See a poster extracted from the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco ImageBase, and the discussion around doing so, as well as Template talk:PD-Art; in short, while simple reproductions of public domain images may be copyrightable outside of the United States (likely in the UK, for instance), they're almost certainly not in the United States, where the Smithsonian is. So copy them, upload them and tag them {{PD-Art}}. (Actually, I may do so first; if I do, I'll post a follow-up here.) grendel|khan 19:14, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
- I've uploaded James Smithson at Oxford-c. 1786.jpg and Johns-James Smithson-1816.jpg. Note that I cropped them to the size of the actual paintings, since there's no point in having the Smithsonian's lettering on the images, and provided a link back to the source for interested people to follow. grendel|khan 19:26, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks very much! I've added the images to "en:James Smithson". Cheers, Jacklee 18:57, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

David Rumsey
Hi, I have found a map on the en:David Rumsey Historical Map Collection (the website). Can you tell me are all the images free use? There is some sort of Creative Commons licence but I want to check first as I don't understand the rules. Is there a template like that for UK en:Geograph images?
I have also found a great map at NPEMap which again has a commons type licence that I don't understand. Can I use either of these on commons? en:User talk:Bobbacon
- I don't think so, I'm sorry. Commons only accepts these Creative Commons licenses: CC-BY (Attribution) and CC-BY-SA (Attribution ShareAlike). Anything with "NC" (non-commercial) or "ND" (no derivatives) in the name of the license is not allowed. These licenses both have non-commercial conditions. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:16, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Uhm, Rumsey is American. I thought Bridgeman v. Corel applied to these map scans? If the original maps are old enough to be PD, why would Mr. Rumsey hold any copyright on the MrSID files, which are faithful reproductions of two-dimensional originals? Lupo 08:22, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- So is the consensus that I can use the Rumsey images but not the NPEMap image (its a scan of a 1931 map)? en:User talk:Bobbacon
- How do you conclude from one opinion and one question that there was any kind of consensus here? Any little bit more patience, please! These sources won't vanish over night. :-) Lupo 14:11, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Ok... the maps I have are really good historical ones for the article i'm writing so i hope the licences are good! en:User talk:Bobbacon
- Does anyone care to comment? Bobbacon, I can't give you advice on what to do; you'll have to make up your own mind. I have made the decision for myself a long time ago at Image:Arrowsmith Oregon Country.jpg. If anyone disagrees: feel free to nominate it for deletion. Lupo 09:22, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
- The previous comment says that commercial use must be allowed. On the first page it says "Images copyright © 2000 by Cartography Associates. Images may be reproduced or transmitted, but not for commercial use. For commercial use or commercial republication, contact carto@luna-img.com." which means there must be a clash of licencing for the David Rumsey collection. Is there a process where administators/users can contact them to ask if Wikimedia projects can use them? If you can tell me what I need to ask I can contact them myself. en:User:Bobbacon
Bridgeman vs Corel definitely applies, though you may have to crop out the edges to get rid of 3D parts of the book. (To Lupo, how do you get the MrSID files? I've been able to download full JPGs but not those.) --NE2 08:11, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks I will upload them now. Do you know the status of the other site I mentioned NPEMap? This is a British website where the authors appear to have scanned in maps but the (presumambly) American Bridgeman vs. Corel obviously wouldnt have jurisdiction here, so i'm still puzzled! The licencing for the maps is here. thanks. en:Bobbacon.
- Even where Bridgeman is not a legal precedent, the same elements of law underlying the decision still apply: in order to hold copyright in a work, you must have contributed some expression of creativity to the work. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:46, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
- "Lupo, how do you get the MrSID files?" — Using the "Insight Browser" interface (requires popups to be allowed for the web site www.davidrumsey.com), you get a two-pane layout: on the right, map thumbnails are displayed; on the left, you can search and do other things. Search for the map you want, then select it in the right pane with a single click. Then click on "data" in the left pane. Scroll to the bottom of the data display: there's a link for "Full Image download in MrSID format". Click it and download. Lupo 06:47, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you! I had been using the Java viewer, which allows JPG but not MrSID export. --NE2 02:33, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Stressed about date stamps
I'm a new user, and have been fumbling with finding the right place to ask this question.
I have a number of images with a date stamp on them (example - Image:2000_0820_TowncenterDrive2.jpg ). The date stamp is a form of watermark, and should be removed. Problem is I cannot do this myself, as the image should not be cropped, and I don't know how to retouch it.
This one in particular, I don't think should be cropped to remove the date, the more I think about it. So if Wikimedia doesn't simply crop them, I feel good about adding other images with the datestamp.
Now then, how might I modify the licensing for the image ? I am guessing that I can edit the section titled Licensing and simply add the requirement that Wikimedia cannot crop the image.
Can I do this? Is there an alternative? Am I being stupid ? Feedback appreciated. -- Mrrxx 23:34, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- You've published it under a copyleft license, which in this particular case means, very simply put, anybody can do with it what they want, provided that they mention you as the original author ánd release modifications under the same license. Wikimedia in the sense you seem to imply doesn't exist; there is a Wikimedia Foundation, but that won't interfere with this sort of thing, the rest of us are simply volunteers like you. Retouching, I think, is and should be the main way in which watermarks are removed. Just keep your pictures on your watchlist, and if someone crops them and you feel not too happy about it, discuss it with him/her. I hope this helps, NielsF ? - Well, yeah, **that image** is already copyleft but the future ones can be licensed as I see fit (or not). But from your response I gather there is Revert capability similar to a page's history, for images as well. I didn't realize that! -- Mrrxx 02:06, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, works about the same way. NielsF ? (en, nl, fr, it) 02:15, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- You can tag all the files with the time stamp with {{ifc|explanation}} and as the explanation say you want the timestamp cloned out if possible but NOT cropped. Someone with editing experiance will then try their best to get rid of the time stamp. --Digon3 talk 23:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

- I think that's the way to go. There really isn't a tag appropriate for these date stamps and the templates page specifies using that one for special handling, which I guess is what I'm asking for. Now I'm happy ! Many thanks -- Mrrxx 02:06, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Image deletion
Image:Reichstag House Of Parliament.jpg
I only have under cc-by-sa or whatever it is. Not GNU. How could i get this deleted quickly and have only at the english wikipedia?

- Please could an admin help me sort things out please? please message me, I need most or all images deleting to be moved to normal wikipedia. Its complicated. Fethroesforia 20:37, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- Just for notification, the images have been deleted and I have managed to get some constructive dialogue. We have figured out who took which pictures, and there are some he does NOT want to upload, these are the metal structure one, the whole load of sachsenhausen photos, the views of the ferhsehturm, the buildings at potsdamer platz and the river spree with the concert hall thing. The others I will check to make sure they are mine and re-upload soon. Fethroesforia 14:04, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Ki155.jpg/Permission
Hi, this page Ki155.jpg/Permission is probably in the wrong place (it's permission for use of an image). Not sure where it needs to go - can someone have a look and see what's going on? thanks. Deadstar 09:45, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- I moved it to the image's talk page. --Matt314 10:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Creative Commons Scotland Licence
I asked a couple of days ago about image attribution on Commons. I've decided I'm going to upload the images, but I don't see the Scottish Creative Commons licences on the 'list' page (presuambly an error on the part of the script that updates it - the licences do indeed exist). Essentially it's a CC-BY-SA 2.5 Licence, but written with Scots law in mind (much the same as all the other jurisdictional CC licences). Will images licensed in this way be acceptable on Commons? (I can create the licence template myself, I just mean is the actual licence acceptable for uploading images to Commons). Cynical 12:03, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think that Scotland version of 2.5 Creative Commons licenses will cause problems. Probably you just need only to create templates. However, if you want to discuss legal issues more deeply, please use Commons talk:Licensing. --EugeneZelenko 14:51, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Nanosatellite images
I recently started a wikipedia page on a Canadian nanosatellite program. Since I couldn't find any recognizably free images on the web, I sent a request to the the people who run the program, asking for free images I could use. I received some images, but the message said nothing about what their license was. Given that I asked for free images, is it safe to assume that is what these are? Vsst 18:52, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- You must make ask them about their licensing. If they reply with the license information, make sure they fit Commons:Licensing. (→O - RLY?) 18:57, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- For avoidance of doubt, please request explicitly permission for derivative & commercial use. -- Bryan (talk to me) 19:14, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Incorrect display as thumbnail.
I just uploaded an image, Image:TH Huxley caricature.jpg and it does not render correctly when I put it in a thumb. The image appears to have the colours inverted or something. Sorry, I could not find anything in the help files. Thanks Fred.e 18:29, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- I couldn't purge it; perhaps the image has bad code? Try opening and saving it in the GIMP and reupload. (→O - RLY?) 18:43, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, I tried it in the humble iPhoto, but to no avail. I will give it a go. I forgot to mention that the image was forwarded to me from another user and that the scan was of a print they own. It was not from an online source. Fred.e 19:08, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Uploading an edited version of an image from the Commons
If I've downloaded an image, which is originally from e.g. NASA or CIA and in the public domain, from Commons, is there any problem uploading an edited version of it to Commons? If not, which licensing should I choose? BEF 14:42, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
- You could so. Will be good idea to left edited image as PD. Please mention source image in new image description. --EugeneZelenko 14:48, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
PD-old
How old must the image be, so we can for shore put the label PD-old on it, considering we don't know the author, and therefore also, if there has pessed by 70 years? There is a lot of old images that are in public domain, but with unknown author. It's a detriment that we can't freely upload and use it. --Janezdrilc 23:31, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
- I think 70 years is enough, but please be prepared that somebody will find an author and request deletion. Sometime ago 100 years threshold was proposed for safely assuming PD-old. --EugeneZelenko 14:17, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
Replacing a image by mistake
I had raplaced Image:The Gateway.JPG with my recently uploaded image by mistake. I had tried using undo function but it didn't show the original image. Could anyone suggest how to resolve it? Thank you! Baycrest 18:13, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
- Done. You need to use rev link on image description. Probably it's not avaliable if your account too new. --EugeneZelenko 14:23, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello.....
Is this image useable and tagged correctly to use on Wikipedia? Thanks very much. RunLikeAnAntelope
- You'd forgotten to add a licensing tag. This is a very important thing to remember, since the only reason we can use the image legally is that its author has published it under a free license (and also because that license requires anyone redistributing the work in original or modified form to mention that license). I've added the missing licensing tag, so it should be okay now. —LX (talk, contribs) 08:11, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

how to attribute creator for sharealike use
Hi,
i'd like to use an image uploaded by the user "Golden Wattle" in some video content. I need to attribute them but just wondering how i go about doing that? is there a standard format? do i credit "Golden Wattle from Wikimedia Commons"?
thanks for your help!
Best wishes,
Michael
- Please tell us which image are you talking about. Are you sure that uploader is also the author? If you are unsure, you may contact him/her by email or his talk page. A.J. 08:13, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
- I would say that your suggested credit is acceptable. If possible, it is also good to include a link to the image page here. / Fred J 12:44, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Internet explorer problem
I have version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr, 070227-2254 128 bits. The last two weeks I get a lot of failure reports and aborting when I look to the recent files. It started when the 4 rows of pictures changed in 3 rows. In the beginning it was a mixed up of pages with 3 rows and 4 rows. I get the following Error report:

This image was tagged for speedy deletion. I initially thought the tagger was crazy for doing so, but now I'm not sure? Can anyone shed some light on it? The image depicts a portion of an amusement park ride (specifically, a car), on display in the Smithsonian. The ride in question is decorated to resemble a popular animated character, although it was not always done in that style. I'm not entirely sure whether to treat it as a sculpture, a building, a vehicle, or what, and it'd be a little difficult to parse even within any one of those categories. The photo itself is CC licensed, so the only issue here is one of derivative works and/or trademark. What do y'all think? -Hit bull, win steak 01:25, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- I'd say derivative work Deadstar 09:46, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- Just for my own edification, can you be more specific? -Hit bull, win steak 15:02, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- As I understand it, if the statue depicted in the image is primarily a statue of copyrighted character (such as Dumbo would be) any two dimensional image of the statue is a derivative work, and violates the copyright of the creator of the character. If this were not the case then it would be easy to illustrate articles about cartoon characters (for example Dumbo) with pictures of statues of them, without violating (in this case Disney) copyright. Was that the level of detail you were looking for? If not, try asking the question again. ++Lar: t/c 22:44, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Inkscape SVG problem
I recently uploaded Image:How to Gimp.svg, but something is wrong. The text I placed on the image in Inkscape is not showing up and there are mysterious black rectangles showing up. I'm new with SVG and am unsure what is wrong. --WillMak050389 04:43, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
- → Moved question to Graphics village pump. --WillMak050389 05:36, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
- I have a similar problem. It has to do with the Z-order of items in the image and I want to figure out how to fix it too. I'll go there myself. Rfc1394 16:30, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Move my image, please?
I uploaded a better (=more cropped) version of the portrait Image:Lise Drougge.png, but was told I couldn't overwrite the existing image because my account is too new. Following instructions, I saved the new one under a different name, Image:Lise Drougge2.png, and came here to ask somebody to please move it over the old one. Both of them shouldn't be here. I uploaded the more cropped version for the purpose of replacing the other one. The original uploader of the first image, User:Bishonen, has no objection. Isberg 15:16, 24 July 2007 (UTC).
- There is no need to delete the original version, and we generally don't delete any images for such reasons. Just use the other_versions parameter of {{Information}} to connect the images. The original version isn't doing any harm, and someone might find it useful for their needs. —LX (talk, contribs) 18:46, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, gee. I really wanted it deleted. It's a pity the instructions I got told me to save it under a different name and ask at the helpdesk to have it moved over the old one, since now those instructions turn out to be misleading. If I'd known that, I would much rather have waited for the account to age, and then done it myself. I guess I'll register an e-mail address and write to you and explain why I need for it to be deleted, it's kind of confidential. Perhaps you would like to see about getting those instructions changed, to reflect the real practice? As for "just use the other version's parameter," etc, I'm afraid I don't understand a word of it. But thanks for replying. Isberg 20:34, 24 July 2007 (UTC).
- Even if you had been able to upload an image on top of another, the old version would still remain accessible from the history in the image description page, and modifications of images that remove information (such as cropping does) are often reverted. For the "other_versions" parameter, see the explanation on Template:Information. —LX (talk, contribs) 22:30, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
OPP image
I was wondering if the image of a suspect in this article, taken by the OPP, can be uploaded under a free licence. I mean, it's a government work, I'd expect some kind of free means to use it. -- Reaper X 17:14, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
- Not all Canadian government images are public domain or free... I am not sure where this is documented here but see, for example Template talk:CanadaCopyright... Crown Copyright imposes incompatible (with CC or GFDL) restrictions on image modification, I believe. ++Lar: t/c 20:48, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Orphaned image policy
Is the Commons policy re. orphaned images the same as that for Wikipedia, i.e., if an image is not being used on any pages it will eventually be deleted? --BrokenSphere 04:57, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- No, we don't delete unused images (just because they are unused). Commons is an image repository for media with potentional encyclopedic or educational use, Commons:Project Scope. Samulili 08:13, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- Having said that -- you should upload stuff with a definite idea of where it might be useful. Uploading a picture of your cat, or an apple, or your shoes, in the vague belief that it could be useful somewhere, somehow, someday, should not be encouraged. :) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 10:08, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- On that note, I'm happy to say that all my uploads are currently in use, all being very recent uploads. I was wondering what would happen if I upload a pic of x, which is used on a page re. x, then someone else later uploads a better pic of x, which replaces mine on the page for x, leaving mine orphaned if it isn't used anywhere else. --BrokenSphere 15:37, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- Disk space is not really a problem (deleted images stay around, after all, so deleting them doesn't actually save any space), so it's very unlikely your images would be deleted for only that reason. But even if they're only used on a Commons gallery, that 'counts' in a sense. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 10:42, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
File is displaying strangely in a category
I migrated Image:Ac.buddhists.jpg from the English Wikipedia to Category:Doi Suthep, but now it doesn't display right when that category is viewed. I changed the image's prior categories while going through the migration process, did this screw it up? BrokenSphere 19:43, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- Nothing screwed it up. What needs to be done is purging the thumbnail that displays in the category. (→O - RLY?) 20:11, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- I've fixed it; the 120px thumbnail wasn't displaying before I purged it. It should display now. (→O - RLY?) 20:24, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- Can anyone do that? It's not Ctrl+F5 is it? --BrokenSphere 20:53, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
Hello! Help requested in uploading an image
PLEASE NOTE: I am not a Wikimedia Commons user. However, I am a Wikipedia contributor and my username on Wikipedia is FClef. I say that because I don't know if that name will appear on this signature.
I have a special request. Having largely authored and edited the article en:Trooping the Colour, I see that a number of pictures from Flickr were recently uploaded by User:Man vyi and have been used on Trooping the colour to good effect.
I would like to ask you, or anyone kindly disposed, to please ASAP upload this picture.
It is one of Jon's pictures in Flickr and is on free licenses, with author attribution requested.
Not being a photographer or anything in that area, I don't have Flickr upload bot or the ability to do this.
I intend to upload it from Wikimedia Cmmons into both the Trooping the Colour article and also another article that I am preparing.
Your immediate uploading of this picture into wikimedia commons will be much appreciated. The title should be Massed Mounted Band, Trooping the Colour, 16 June 2007.
Thank you. --82.12.254.61 21:38, 26 July 2007 (UTC) damn! I see my signature doesn't work in wikimedia commons. In Wikipedia, I am User:FClef - please reply to my Talk page there - or just upload the pic into Commons. I will continue to check. Thanks a million. xxx
- I did it WilyD 02:49, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
- Beaten to it! Thanks WilyD; the photo is uploaded as Image:TroopingTheColours.jpg. Man vyi 04:51, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Elgar's birthplace
Hello, I am new to the commons and, not being very technical, am struggling with uploading. Could someone please check that I have done the right thing on Image: Elgar's birthplace.JPG. I had a message on my talkpage from Siebrand - who is now on holiday - saying that something was not in order. I have now added a PD-self tag. Is that what was required? Am I done now?Hikitsurisan 21:48, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

US government logos and public domain
I was looking at the US Department of Justice's website and noticed that their copyright policy says most things are released into the public domain (as we're used to), but that logos are only "use by permission". The full relevant two sections are here. While I doubt that DOJ would harass Wikimedia about improperly using their images without permission, marking images like Image:Doj.png as public domain makes it more likely that other people or institutions with different motives might copy those "public domain" images from Commons. I'm unfamiliar with local policy and procedure, so some guidance about handling this would be appreciated.--Chaser 06:38, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- Best place to discuss such questions - Commons talk:Licensing. Most likely similar issues was raised. But it's necessary to search in Commons:Deletion requests. --EugeneZelenko 14:17, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Help, please
Because of a stupid cut-and-paste error I have mistakenly created a file entitled: Category:Leoš Janáček. One of these "categories" should of course be eliminated. The one file in that category needs to join the others in Category:Leoš Janáček. Please can someone help? Hikitsurisan 20:47, 28 July 2007 (UTC) (PS I don't understand why I cannot double-square-bracket those two filenames to give a convenient blue link. It works on Wikipedia?????)
- This category does not exist. (→O - RLY?) 20:50, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- It DOES exist. I don't actually understand why it appears as a red link, but it does actually link to the category Leoš Janáček which, as you will see, has four images. I'm sorry, I really thought I had cracked the procedure, but I have stupidly forgotten to put a destination filename for the last two images I have just uploaded so they appear with my original jpg number. How can I change it? I can't see an option for the destination filename in the edit mode.Hikitsurisan 21:30, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- Category doesn't exist. It's mentioned in 4 files and 1 articles, but nobody create it. If you want to change it, just change descriptions of files/article. --EugeneZelenko 14:39, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- I've cleaned it up. Hikitsurisan had accidentally created Category:Category:Leoš Janáček. --Davepape 18:31, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Free photograph usage
Firstly, is it okay to crop a free photograph of a person with the purpose of using it as an icon, for say, a userbox?
And second, when uploading it, how would I tag it? Would it be the same as using the whole photograph? → Hot Dog Wolf 20:26, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- Could you be more specific? Which photograph are we talking about? The answer will depend on the licensing and other legal matters specific to the particular photograph. —LX (talk, contribs) 20:49, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- This photograph. As far as I know, it's copyleft, since this and all the other photographs on the site are self-taken, and it has not been stated anywhere, in the photo's data or website, that these photographs are protected by copyright law. At the very least, I'd have to get the author's written permission to modify and use it here. → Hot Dog Wolf 22:46, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- All creative works are protected by copyright laws by default, so you can't assume that a work is free just because there is no copyright notice or based on who created the work. If there is no acceptable licensing statement, you cannot upload the work without first getting the copyright holder to explicitly approve an acceptable license. For more information on doing this, see Commons:OTRS and Commons:Email_templates. —LX (talk, contribs) 11:42, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Images that ought to be PD-ineligible
I've been going through Category:Images that should use vector graphics, and I've come across a number of images (see for example this and this and this among others, which are just the standard representations for complete graphs, or this, which is only a straight line) which are listed as licensed under GPL/GFDL/whatever, but which seem pretty clearly (to me) to be not eligible for copyright. Would it be appropriate to mark these as PD-ineligible? --Sopoforic 10:46, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
- I believe so, yes. —LX (talk, contribs) 11:29, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
