In one of the longest-running science fiction series in network TV history, FBI special agents investigate unexplained, mind-bending cases known as "X-Files." Though the government is convinced that the outlandish reports are false, conspiracy theorist Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and realist Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), for most of the series, stop at nothing to prove that "the truth is out there." Series creator Chris Carter also serves as executive producer of the thrilling pop-culture phenomenon.

Critics Consensus

Though it may not make many new believers, The X-Files' return to business as usual is a refreshing upgrade from the show's underwhelming previous outing.

James Dyer Empire Magazine Happily, with episode one out of the way, The X-Files clicks back into groove, swiftly reminding us why we all loved it so much in the first place. Feb 6, 2018 Full Review Lucy Mangan Guardian Once we were charmed by this gloriously imaginative fiction, but with this latest iteration Chris Carter has only managed to weave a tapestry of unparalleled nonsense. Rated: 2/5 Feb 5, 2018 Full Review Karen D'Souza San Jose Mercury News Certainly if you are among those of us who will never stop wanting to believe, more time with our beloved alien chasers as they trade barbs while battling beasties is always cause for celebration. Jan 26, 2018 Full Review Dana Sloane Mediaversity Reviews As brilliant as Dana Scully was, and as badly as young women needed her, she remained frustratingly beyond the grasp of the men who wrote her. Rated: D Aug 18, 2019 Full Review Alberto Carlos Espinof it seems that this time they are not in a hurry, and that at some point they have breathed, reflected on what they want to offer the public. [Full Review in Spanish] Aug 2, 2019 Full Review Rob Lowman Los Angeles Daily News This season, the series, which turns 25 in September, rolls out current news images - North Korea and President Trump, among them - to remind us of those dangers. Still, it doesn't let that overpower the basic appeal of the show. Dec 28, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

streng g one of the worst Retcons of all TIme Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/11/23 Full Review Gareth v For the most part relatively entertaining but maybe it's time for Mulder & Scully to retire. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/24/23 Full Review jacob b You know what the best part about the mythology episodes was? Seeing Reddit throw a hissy fit over the controversial twists and how they're structured more like 24 than The X-Files (fitting considering that 24 pretty much stole The X-Files' thunder back in the early 2000's; 9/11 made damn sure of that; and the BTS features confirm that Fox's former biggest non-Simpsons cash cow was revived because of 24: Live Another Day being a ratings hit). After all, it's pretty clear the mythology has meant diddly squat since S6. At the very least, the de facto series finale ended on a slightly better note than S9. It doesn't feel like much of a cliffhanger to me especially since the MOTW episodes tended to mostly end on ignored sequel hooks. Probably set up a spin-off: Son of The X-Files or some such nonsensical title. The MOTW episodes though? They're a ton of fun and do a great job hearkening back to the glory days. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson's chemistry remains great, it knows when to be funny and when to be serious, does a better job with Skinner than the previous season and demonstrate that even after all these years, the people involved still have a few ideas left in there (I did like the mostly dialogue-free episode; the second-best piece of media released in 2018 about people being quiet I've seen). Shame that Mulder and Scully's mini-mes just vanished into thin air; though I suppose the writers didn't want to risk another "Doggett and Reyes" (they certainly didn't get ingrained into the pop culture consciousness, have they now?). All in all, the episodes sandwiched in between the first and last one are fun but the character's Struggles have left something to be desired. Think we'll get a third movie one day? Gillian Anderson might have expressed reluctance to do S12 but she said nothing about a third film. So let them finish The X-Files once and for all, Disney! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review tom m Delightful. Interesting. Well done. Entertaining. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Tim L Thanks again for another great season! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/11/21 Full Review Audience Member While it might not sit right with hardcore fans, THE X-FILES return is a much-needed comeback and finally gave an ending that further proved our purpose for believing.
