- Die Wahlen zur South West African Legislative Assembly 1978 war die letzte Parlamentswahl in Südwestafrika vor der Unabhängigkeit Namibias im Jahr 1990 und fand zwischen dem 4. und dem 8. Dezember 1978 statt. Wahlberechtigt war erstmals nicht nur die weiße Bevölkerung des Mandatsgebietes. Die Demokratische Turnhallenallianz ging als Sieger aus der Wahl hervor. Die nach der Wahl gebildete Regierung stand bis zu ihrem Ende (infolge der Auflösung des Parlaments im Jahre 1983) unter der Kontrolle von Südafrika. Die Wahlen wurden ohne die Aufsicht der Vereinten Nationen durchgeführt und unter Missachtung der 1972 von der Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen beschlossenen Anerkennung der Befreiungsbewegung SWAPO als „einzige Vertreterin der namibischen Volkes“. These first elections conducted under universal adult suffrage—all previous elections had been Whites-only—were won by the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance, which claimed 41 of the 50 seats. The elections were conducted without United Nations (UN) supervision, and in defiance of the 1972 United Nations General Assembly's recognition of the militant South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO) as the "sole representative of Namibia's people". The UN henceforth declared the elections null and void. The resulting government, dependent on South African approval for all its legislation, was in power until its dissolution in 1983. (en)
