The album pays tribute to late 1970s and early 1980s American music, particularly from Los Angeles. Recording sessions took place from 2008 to 2012 at Henson, Conway and Capitol Studios in California, Electric Lady Studios in New York City, and Gang Recording Studio in Paris, France. Random Access Memories was the duo's final album before they split up in February 2021. Het album werd opgenomen in de New Yorkse Electric Lady Studios, in de Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood en een Parijse opnamestudio en is verschenen bij Columbia Records op 17 mei 2013 in een aantal Europese landen waaronder België en Nederland, op 20 mei 2013 in Frankrijk en op 21 mei 2013 in de Verenigde Staten.
