Inicialmente un miembro de un grupo de bandidos en la frontera entre el Imperio búlgaro, el Imperio bizantino y el Reino de Serbia, había sido reclutado por los bizantinos como mercenario. A pesar de su oportunista participación en la guerra civil bizantina de 1341-1347, en la cual alternaba entre los dos bandos del conflicto, se convirtió en el gobernante de un gran territorio a los pies de las montañas Ródope y en la Tracia Occidental. Momchil consiguió diversas victorias iniciales contra turcos y bizantinos, incendiando sus navíos y casi llegando a matar a uno de sus principales oponentes en ese momento, el emperador bizantino Juan Cantacuceno. A pesar de esto, fue derrotado y muerto por un ejército combinado turco-bizantino en 1345. Il fait d'abord partie d'un groupe de brigands dans les zones frontières entre l'Empire byzantin, l'Empire bulgare et la Serbie. Par la suite, il est recruté comme mercenaire par les Byzantins. Grâce à son engagement opportuniste dans la guerre civile byzantine de 1341-1347, où il change plusieurs fois de camps, il se taille une principauté dans les Rhodopes et à l'ouest de la Thrace. Momchil parvient à remporter plusieurs victoires contre les Turcs et les Byzantins. Il brûle les navires turcs et parvient presque à tuer son principal adversaire de l'époque, Jean VI Cantacuzène. Malgré tout, il est vaincu et tué par une armée byzantino-turque en 1345. Grâce à son opposition aux Turcs, il est resté dans la légende des Slaves du Sud comme un combattant face à l'invasion turque des Balkans. (fr)

Initially a member of a bandit gang in the borderlands of Bulgaria, Byzantium and Serbia, Momchil was recruited by the Byzantines as a mercenary. Through his opportunistic involvement in the Byzantine civil war of 1341–1347, where he played the various sides against each other, he became ruler of a large area in the Rhodopes and western Thrace. Momchil achieved initial successes against Turks and Byzantines alike, setting Turkish ships on fire and almost managing to kill one of his main opponents at the time, John VI Kantakouzenos. Despite this, he was defeated and killed by a joint Byzantine–Turkish army in 1345. Due to his opposition to the Turks, he is remembered in popular South Slavic legend as a fighter against the Turkish invasion of the Balkans. (en)

Ottenne successi iniziali contro turchi e bizantini, incendiò delle navi turche e riuscì quasi ad uccidere uno dei suoi principali avversari, Giovanni VI Cantacuzeno. Nonostante ciò, fu sconfitto e ucciso da un esercito bizantino-turco giunto nel 1345.
